What could be happening is that, in a vert. column, only every 2nd pixel is read in a pass (for speed?), maybe alternating between passes, so that would mean that out of 5120 pixels in a column, 2160 effective pixels are read at a time.

4.2 μm * sin 45 * 5120 = 12.8 mm height

Dan
Dan, I think it is much simpler.

The chip has a 19:10 AR which is a good thing for wide screen movie capture. 3:2 can be easily cropped from it.

8,192 : 2x2,160 is 19:10 again.

Therefore, think you achieve the 45 pattern by only using the black fields in a checkerboard matrix. This checkerboard has 8192 columns and 4320 rows. Because only blacks fields are populated, the number of pixels is 8192 x 4320 /2 or 17.7M. In order to communicate to the "stupid" public, Sony had the choice between 4096x4320 and 8192x2160. And guess what? They took the latter. IMHO, that's it.

The pixels are square and probably aligned by a half pitch in odd columns, like in a brick wall turned 90.

Moreover, it explains why the article mentions that the resolution can be extrapoated to 8192x4320. Which is nonsense of course.

The proper resolution after demosaicing would be 5792x3055 and nothing else.

Falk, I understand what your saying, but why a "checker board"? Isn't the QE being seriously compromised if only half the squares are "black" (sensels)? Why can't all the squares, on the 45-orientated board, be "black"?

Dan.

Dan, I meant somethig different from what you understood.

Of course, the entire board is filled. But the "positions" of sensels are registered like black checkerboard fields. Think of the coordinates of bricks in a brick wall (where bricks are square). Horizontally, you have twice as many brick positions as there are bricks in a row. I think the Sony sensor has a similiar brick layout but turned 90.

Alternatively, "black" checkerboard fields could be rotated 45 and grown by Sqrt(2) to make "white" fields disappear.

Maybe more info here:
sonyalpharumors | Blog | Sony shows a 18 Megapixel sensor with 120 fps

Which completely contradicts Ogl comments btw.

The interesting bit is the reference to the Sony ClearVid 45 pixel layout. As described here: http://www.sony.co.uk/res/attachment/file/78/1237477501978.pdf

Sony tries indeed to sell the 45 layout as providing more effective pixels which, of course, is marketing BS.

Are you not regularly taking images with the camera rotated by 45 to double your chip area and then use horizontal interpolation to double the horizontal resolution?

Boy, this document contains the worst marketing BS I've ever read.

Is This the Chip ....

.... that Pentax will use in there up coming mirror-less camera u think ?

Do u think Pentax will hit the video thing hard and maybe have a articulating screen with that camera ?

I honestly don't think the people at the top have a clue.

Otherwise by now we'd have seen something as simple as manual controls in video mode on even the K-5 and the K-7 by now.

And oh yes a reliable and solid quality flash system.
