Fine! Check it out: dx0mark comparison of Pentax K-5 and Sony A77

K-5 has nearly a full EV more in the dynamic range department and look at the relative ISOs: The K-5 is nearly 50% better. You have to know to look at more than megapixels. (It appears that both Dx0mark and the reviewer I posted to on Amazon have independently discovered the same thing - one through testing and one through experience and subjectivity.)
Nearly a full EV more? Would you say it's more like 2/3? The same value a translucent mirror would steal light, probably?
Hmm....

For all those citing the supposed DR deficiencies of the Sony 24MP sensor, I would highly suggest taking a look at DXO's evaluation of the Sony A580, a camera known conclusively to have exactly the same sensor as the K-5, and is a traditional DSLR with no pellicle mirror.

DxOMark - Compare cameras side by side

DXO gives the A580 a DR rating of 13.3 EV, in contrast to the K-5 which has 14.1 EV, despite both having the same sensor and both being traditional DSLRs. On the other hand, the NEX-7 (also no pellicle mirror) is given a rating of 13.4 EV, slightly above the A580, so if anything there is even more DR to be potentially squeezed out of the 24MP sensor compared to the 16MP.

I would wager the difference is not inherent to the sensor, but to Sony's implementation as seen from their previous cameras. If Pentax can do whatever they did before (14 bit, ISO 80 or whatever) I'm guessing there is no reason why the 24MP's DR can't be as good as the K-5's.

Agreed, and we may still see an announcement. I seem to remember a Pentax statement earlier in the year about a K5N (K5II) that would see us through until the next model at year end. So the final of the 9 announcements my well be a 24mp K3 next week

As the press release claimed the K-5II is the flagship model, there won't be any newer flagship K-3 released this year.

I agree. I think the re-release of the Silver K-5 this past Spring and the warmed over K-5II/K-5IIs is a sign that Pentax is trying to buy a little time to put the finished touches on the K-3. I think the K-3 will have a version of the Sony 24MP APS-C sensor (or possibly the successor) with no AA filter and I HOPE a new AF array with 21-AF points and a refined AF.

If the future of Pentax DSLRs is 24mp and above ,this makes me think the future lineup will be all-LPFless types.. with moire correction through software that can be activated through the menus

The higher the MP count the more the camera will benefit from removing the AA filter. I would like to know what the light loss is due to the AA filter. Like Sony's translucent mirror there is a slight loss of light from the AA filter. 15%? I hear different numbers from different people, but they may all be guessing.

I would love to see a monochrome K-3. No AA and no Bayer filter. The resolution and low light would be excellent. It is a small market, buy I would gladly give up color in one of my bodies for a monochrome option.

it could
it could also be the AF540 replacement since apparently it is no longer in manufacture (someone tried to get parts and was told that)

Then it's going to be a very boring Photokina for Pentax. I would hope they have kept at least one item to announce during the show or just before.

That was the HD coating of the DA 560. See Adam's post on the announcements.

Still hoping for a 645D "Light" to steal some of the FF show
