3 years since K5 great ISO performance with top iso51200, sensor technologies doesn't seem advancing as much as I hoped. While other features of D7100 are pretty nice, iso and video specs didn't improve much.... I mean compare to the sensor 3 yrs ago. Need another sensor iteration to pump the iso up?

most importantly, AA filterless like the K5IIs - as I strongly felt after using the K5IIs, AA filterless will be the trend for APSC camera. It improve image quality so much.

Same here, Looks like pentax anticipated the market pretty well by coming out with the K5IIs.

Yes! PENTAX sometime made pretty awesome thing. (just sometime! LOL) Weather sealed and no AA filter? D7100 is aiming at the K5IIs!

But thanks to D7100, the next APSC from PENTAX will have to be able compete with it!

Yep...good for consumers...not so great for Pentax. This probably kills their initial pricing so they won't make as much to fund their next body.
But the next APSC already has been designed if it's going to be released in April...only thing that can be changed as a result of the D7100 is pricing....

Has it been a few pages since someone posted that gag k-3 from last April 1st?

It still pops up on DPR and the rumor sites.

Now I can understand the degree of reservation shown by the Pentax official at CP+ regarding FF. It puts serious dampers on things for the next APS-C camera. I know there are people around here that openly say they are not interested in FF, but how good does it feel to buy another APS-C when FF the mothership is looming close behind?

That mothership only exists in your mind. What matters to me is how well my gear serves me, irrespective of any hypes or trends. Hell, some people still shoot analog, and some people are even returning to analog. Are they wrong? No. It's not about wrong or right. For me, I think a fullframe camera will be bigger and heavier than APS-C, things I'm not particularly fond of.

Taking the 24MP APS-C sensor and using that wafer for a FF sensor would get you close to 50MP. Canon has been testing a 47+/- FF. If Pentax is looking at a release date of late fall 2013 or later, then I would expect it to be closer to 50MP than 36MP. Then we will see the 60- 80MP 645DII.
Pentax doesn't make their own sensors, and historically have not been the first to market with any supplier's sensor.

ISO to only 6400 seems a little odd for the D7100 being a generation ahead of the K-5, which has a stop above this on its native sensitivity range. I'd only be impressed if the 6400 results eclipse that of the K-5.
Actually it's not native to the sensor, that only goes up to 1600

They should move the pixels count up before they force everyone to go without an AA.
The higer the pixel count the less negative impact it will have that you don't have an AA but... AA filter for such sensor will only blur the image very little so i'm curious what the gain will actually be.

Full frame is going to be bigger and heavier, more expensive and require new lenses. I'll pass.

I bought FF lenses for a reason (aside from my Tamron 17-50). so if FF comes along, fantastic. My F50 1.7 now becomes my main lens from the FA35 and the 35 gives me finally my fast semi-wide angle that's been missing on Pentax in crop.

However, I'm also not married to any system and since I primarily shoot at 50mm, I can just as easily move to Nikon, if needed, BUT they have to offer something compelling. The D800 is that, BUT I'm not interested in so many MP and the size of the body is fairly tough to deal with. This is one thing keeping me on a high end APS-c.

For an enthusiast - since we don't know what will happen, these are my contingencies:
  1. reduce my excess gear to a level that I actually use.
    1. in progress
  2. If the next camera is nothing but "evolution" (such as was the K5II/IIs), buy a K5II on close out
  3. If the next camera is a groundbreaking APSc with semi-pro control set (K-5 replacement), buy it and don't look back.
  4. If the next camera is FF, but isn't really exceptional, wait for the evolution edition or a groundbreaking APSc
  5. If the next camera is a ground-breaking FF - find a way to buy it, even if that means waiting a year for the price to drop at retail
The problem will come if the next camera is a groundbreaking APSc and I buy it, then the next camera after that is a groundbreaking FF. We should all hope for such a problem.
