So the K-z will be kind of like the Nikon D5100 vs the D7000 then - ie same sensor as the K-5 but no pentaprism and a few less features than the K-5.

K-5 is so much better than the K-7 that, barring massive improvements in AF technology (or full frame! ), I doubt I'll want tto upgrade anytime soon. Never say never though...

Don't think 24mp APS-C will offer anything more other than slower PP times

The K5 is already a very good camera.
If Pentax can work on the problems of the overall system, that would be much better :

1. Better AF (esp. AF-C)
2. Better MF focus confirm
3. Better PTTL and better wireless commander (radio control??)
4. More lenses (esp. primes)
5. Tweakable HDR mode
6. Focus stacking
7. AF in video

IMO, things like better ISO and DR can wait a year or two as its really nice enough atm. Anyway, its more dependent on what the sensor seller can come up with, so its a level playing field (esp. between Nikon, Sony, Pentax)

BTW I will sell all Pentax stuff after the new crappy camera will be announced. I need the FF for my Ltds, especially for 31. I dont't need Pentax shitty cropped stuff at all, it's just overpriced for its optical performance.
Good for you but what is the link with the thread subject ?

How do we even know it will be called the K-3?
We don't.
Therefore I'm going to call it Rupert. Because I can.

If they want to use a 24 Mp sensor they surely have to increase the processing power to handle those 24 Mp, hence they have introduce the PRIME III processor.
That PRIME III processor would also be fine for a 60 Mp 645D

I dont think there will be a 24mp aps-c and if there is then its a bad idea and its just going to be dividing the existing resolution into smaller parts and not actually getting you anything real.

guy its waaaay to early for this thread half of you dont even have a k-5 yet :P

I think it's a little early too! If you think about Pentax's design philosophy, the new "K-3" will most likely have a new body, improved ergos and rear lcd screen and a few other body tweaks, probably dual sd slots with an improved 16mp Exmor sensor. Here's the reasoning behind my logic.

IstD - 6mp Sony sensor
K10D - 10mp Sony sensor (based off of 6mp sensor), new body design
K20D - 14mp Samsung sensor (new sensor), improved body design
K-7 - 14mp Samsung sensor ("enhanced" sensor), new body design
K-5 - 16mp Sony Exmor sensor (new sensor), improved body design
"K-3 - 16 mp Sony Exmor (improved sensor), new body design" This is my guess bassed on past Pentax decisisons....

The K-5's worth it, if you can get past the fear of the front-focusing issue paraded around.
How much more high ISO performance do we need? (Yes, I know we want clean ISO gazillion shots... but I can say my best images are ones at ISO 80, not at 6400+ )

Enjoy it - it's (reasonably) cheap at the moment, and it's a keeper.

Sorry, but isn't it reasonable to think that major updating on sensors, processors, bodies etc, at this point, with possible difficulties in the components supplies would wait for the 2012 Photokina? So meaning, some months more than what would be expected based on the previous releases schedule?

I can see a K-30 with the new 24MP APS-C sensor in it. It will have a larger body than the K-5. It will have the following features:
1. swivel screen
2. dual SD slots
3. more fps
4. improved AF

This will give Pentax a three dslr camera lineup with the K-5 being the middle camera.

Yep, for those who forgot about it, Photokina is every two years which makes 2012 the next one.
NO Photokina next september/october.
and es, an hypothetical 24MP sensor would need faster processor just fine for 645D mk2.

There will be two rendezvous next year:

- PMA/CliQ moved to January 2012 and merged with CES
- Photokina from 18 to 23 September 2012

If the "16 months between announcements of expert bodies" rule (see K10D - K20D - K-7 - K-5 announcements) is followed, the successor to the K-5 (K-2 to recycle an old name?) should be announced in January 2012 at CliQ.

But there have been some disruptions in Japan lately...
