1. Better AF
2. Better AF
3. Better AF
4. Better AF
5. Better AF

I've used Nikon D90 for one day. Every picture was in focus, tack sharp exactly there where I was focusing. I wish I could say the same about K-5....

I use the 7D from time to time and the AF is just so fast and smooth with USM and HSM lenses. I think part of the AF speed issue is SDM. I tried the DA* 55mm and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4. Sigma is definitely faster.

I'm sure Pentax knows that their AF system is the current weak link. I hope they can address that issue.

Heaven forbid I should adopt the mindset of a frickin' marketing department!
That's funny, since you certainly sound like a marketer sometimes...

I agree since it would cost more, but not on the grounds that old lenses would eat into the profits of new ones. The two classes of lenses appeal to totally different types of photographers. Most will not forsake auto-focus.

No matter, since they don't listen to us anyway. That's probably for the best; we'd probably design a camel.

Well that is the slowest off the hole bunch. So not a good one to compare.

But it is a small lens compared to the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 and the AF motor is moving less glass. No good reason for it to be slow.

Exactly which SDM lens it the fast one?

I think it's a little late to worry about the issues relating to the early K mount lenses. They were manufactured from 1975 to 1984. the crippled K mount has been the norm for a decade. By the time another body comes out we will be looking well beyond 25 years since any of the pre-KA lenses have been manufactured. I really think it's time to get over it.

There are good reasons for the lens to be slow; Jun Hirakawa (the designer) wanted a good MF feel and slow gearing for precise focusing. After all this lens was not meant to replace the FA 50/1.4 (which is FAST!) but it's rather the spiritual successor of the FA* 85/1.4. So, the DA* 55 is meant as a portrait lens and should be treated as such.

My point was not that Pentax AF is slow. No. It's inaccurate.

– The Sony A77 (or whatever it will be called) will have a 24MP sensor in an APS-C body for well under $2,000 later this year.

Since it is an AF lens goal should have been to produce a lens that was fast and accurate. Canon, Nikon, & Sigma all produce very fast/accurate lenses in this focal length. Portrait lens or not it is still a 55mm lens.

The mega pixel war is irrelevant. The only thing that matters it that the next generation of sensors produce better images over a wider ISO range.

People get too wrapped up in the number of MPs.
