Do we actually have any good theories on when a K-3 (or whatever the new K-5 II will be called) would be announced and released?
If it were just a Nikon D7100 sensor but in the body of a K-5 II, I'd be a very happy shooter.

Theories? Yes, several dozen different ones.
Actual information? No.

I said GOOD theories though. Like, based on when they announced the K-5 and then the K-5 II or something. I mean, I'm not a Pentax-history-buff so I don't really know exactly when things happen, I think the K-5 was released September 2010?
Also, on a scale of 1 to 10, how likely do we think it is that we'll see the 24MP with no AA filter sensor D7100 in the K-3?

It is most likely that all future DSLRs from Pentax Ricoh will closely follow offers from both Nikon and Canon, and add extra on top of basic similarities, be lighter in weight and a bit more affordable too.

Say something GR does when compared to the Coolpix A — very similar on surface, yes, but when you go in details, the GR is overall much better thought out product.

In absence of real Sci-Fi and technologically impossible advantages, that is the only way to go for Pentax Ricoh.

There have been a couple of posts with analysis based on past release dates. One demonstrating that the earthquake in Japan disrupted release schedules. But there are IMHO too many other variables to base any kind of a guess on past performance.

  1. The purchase by Ricoh means both a disruption in regular schedules during the transition as well as new ownership who may not agree with prior release schedules
  2. The earthquake in Japan as well as flooding in Indonesia disrupted production schedules for a lot of products and potentially components needed
  3. Reviews so far of the 24mp sensors do not indicate much of an improvement over the current 16mp sensor used in k-5II
  4. Ricoh and Pentax both have skilled engineers but combining those teams to capitalize on that knowledge will take time and they may have decided to wait until that bears fruit
  5. Ricoh may be working to retool or evaluate manufacturing processes. This is one area not mentioned much but may in the long run be the most important as Pentax becomes the beneficiary of Ricoh manufacturing skills. I suspect this more than anything else is the reason for replacing the k-30 with k-50
  6. Ricoh has stated they want to be a player in this industry, which means playing for the long haul. If they are looking 10 - 15 years out then delaying a product for a year to make sure it is right is immaterial. This would be a different philosophy than Hoya had, so any guesses on release dates based on Hoya schedule would be unreliable
In summary: No one who knows anything is talking. And based on the very, very tight lid kept on the k-50 / k-500 launch I doubt we will hear anything until Pentax wants us to.

The 24MP may not be an improvement over the 16MP by itself... but I'd be willing to forgo the AA filter on 24MP whereas I'm hesitant on 16MP.

Agreed. And I'm looking forward to 24mp but Pentax MAY have just decided it was not worth the investment for so little improvement. But this is just speculation. It is also possible the President of Ricoh had a toothache at the meeting to discuss the k-3 release and canceled it because he wasn't feeling good.

Will you give me any more details if I come down there? And maybe sneak me a sample?

How bad would diffration hurt an APS-C sensor in 24mp size? Wouldn't it be softer at say, f/9 than the 16mp sensor, both without an AA filter, and both using the same lens, for instance the F50 f/1.7?

Hurt the sensor? Not at all

Noticeable?

You could shrink yourself down to pixel size and jump in to see for yourself. On a standard computer screen? Good luck trying to see it.

The AA vs no-AA filter thing is a bit if a canard.

According to the article below the diffraction limited aperture for an APS-C sensor with
16 MP and 24 MP is 9.1 and 7.4 respectively. But the impact of diffraction is gradual so I do not know whether by 9.1 it would take away all advantage of the 24 MP sensor.

yes diffraction is gradual, however there are few lenses that perform optimally at f/9.1 - f/7.1 is closer to f/8 which is where most 50mm lenses perform identically.

The trick is to stop the lens down so the DOF is "just so" and fits the needs of the subject.

Digitalis, these are part of bigger image I guess.
Could you please post the uncropped image? Just to put things in perspective..

Thanks !
