There could be many reasons, if the rumour turns out to be true. I'd like to think the reason is that the sensor gives Pentax the best image quality, DR, noise performance et al from the current crop of sensors. Image quality, image quality: it's always one of the key metrics in their cameras. No mushy, noisy sensors for them even if they offer more mpx.
In addition, there are rumours of a high-res mode using some kind of shift system to combine several images into one high-res image, a kind of HDR I suppose for static subjects, landscapes, etc. The processing power required for that must be pretty scary, so I imagine there is a limit to the sensor mp-count they can use without the camera taking 45 minutes to process each shot.
Of course all of these points are complete rumour and conjecture, so who knows.
