How manufacturers sell cameras to stores

When a camera company decides to open an account with a dealer, they look at the dealer's money status and tell the dealer that they can buy x amount of dollars in product. For example, if nikon gives you a $20,000 credit limit, you can order up to 20k in nikon product. Generally a dealer is expected to pay for the product within a specified time, say 120 days. If the dealer pays sooner they are generally given a discount (3 to 5 percent). If they pay late very often they may be removed from the dealer list. To stay a dealer, a store will also probably be required to purchase a certain dollar amount of product. Even if you pay on time, you may be removed because you didn't sell enough. Manufacturers almost never sell "on consignment".

Ricoh purchase

wonder if this wasn't a warning sign .... some times seemingly random events are associated with these types of buy outs ... putting things in order before the change over

I would say that was the #1 reason it was closed.

Another point is that selling on consignment is extremely risky. You depend on the honesty of the retailer to report what has been sold and to remit the money. Selling outright is simply a matter of credit control. Selling on consignment involves a lot more monitoring of stock which might, if unsold and returned, not even be in a saleable condition.

I know from experience in the book business that when people complain about a retailer no longer stocking something, the explanation is usually that the retailer hasn't paid his supplier and the account is 'on stop'. Of course they never tell the customer that.
