I think it is a better deal than k5 if it does not have quality control issues. Amen.

Pentax should run a campaign for it now from future/potential users, start a "cult" following/club...

"iQ" as in "i "Q" as in i am a Q user or i do the Q

dam just hire me i'll write the whole dam thing for a Q system

If they can get the price down, it will help greatly. Personally, I think $499 is where they need to be at. Assuming the IQ will be better than the competition.

Marketing and presence will play a far larger role for Pentax in the US since they seem to be behind in that.

Hell No

Lets put this into perspective...... I paid roughly $700 for my brand new Pentax K-7 long before the K-5 was around. $800 for this? Or $700 for this? Definitely not in my future

I just wish pentax would move forward with its APSC system and not waste its R&D money on things like this.

Even at $699 I think people would still be hesitant to buy one. In my honest opinion, the price drop would have to be around $150 to $200 before it can really contend. The size and form factor makes it appealing. However the price is what is off putting. But it a move in the right direction.
Yep about $150 -200 less would work.

Right now, I'd be more inclined to snag an LX5 if I wanted a high-quality P&S backup. (I suspect the street price will be similar.) However, I haven't seen the results from this baby.

It might work out if they threw in like 2 more lenses or something...that might actually be a good promotional move for them, but I don't think they could afford to do that.

I have heard that before it comes out in the US, the price of the Pentax Q may well fall by up to $100!

At the current $799 it's a bit expensive, but if the price would come closer to that of the competition, do you think Pentax would be in business with this whole idea?

At B&H it's up for $799.95 kit:

disagree, Pentax needs to be in more diverse markets
they have done well building the apsc line particularly growing it with all the wacky colours and one off models and i'm pretty certain have some tricks up their sleeves. the 645d gives them a halo product that is the most competitive product in it's segment
the q is unique to say the least. if the price hits 6-650 and it is built as well as it seems it could be a winner. not for everyone, but then Pentax isn't in general.
Certainly it looks to give them a serious product at the top of the p/s world and a very compact alternative to any ILC once a lens is mounted

doesn't address much on my wish list, but it has intrigued me enough to decide i won't settle for the g12/s95/lx5 etc, and even removed a little of my X100 lust

I still have all my other cameras for when i need good DOF, i'll wait and see how the performance is now before buying yet another camera (unless i get a smoking K5 deal )

I'd like to see them offer a kit with a small metal carry case like the old 110 kit, with all the lenses and maybe a small retro looking flash that works with the lens shutter advantage
instant collectible

something like this

I think I am going to buy it, and then play with it for a little while, and then give it to my soon to be 5 year old girl. She loves taking pictures, and pretty good at it.

Japan Market probably. I heard the Japanese economy is in good grounds and it's people able to afford such pricey toy inspite of the economic turmoil, earthquake, nuclear fall-out and tsunami that hit the country.

I'll give mine a $100 P&S camera when he's about that age. don't want mine breaking an $800 camera in a few short months.

At PMA, I was told the Q will be available for sale sometime in July for A$799.

This is a good price, since according to Panasonic the GF3 (closest competitor to the Q) will probably be A$799 body only and A$999 with a twin lens kit.

I think based on these prices, the Q may be better value than the GF3, and street prices may well be $100 lower.
with less functionality with the GF3, I doubt it would be priced at $800. it would probably would had retained an $800 premium if it is able to retain some of the GH2 or G3's capabilities, aside from going against it's other 2 older siblings in the market. the GF3 is more likely plays as the budget version of the other higher end Pany. at best the GF3 would likely be priced around $500-$600, the G3 at $700-$800 and the GH2 at $1,000. aside from that, I heard some people were able to get a brand-new GH2 for $600-$700. I'm not sure what's up with that though but they sure were able to get a steal of a price.
