So what's the second 2011 Pentax mirrorless?

So now we know the shape of the first 2011 Pentax MILC. There's a persistent rumour of a second 2011 mirrorless body. What are Pentax's options, then:
1. K-based FF-sized mount with an APS-C sensor
2. A fixed-lens mirrorless APS-C body
3. A new mount based on the APS-C
4. Some form of (high-end?) fixed-lens p&s

Am I alone in thinking that it's this wide open?

(I'm going discount, out of hand, a µ43-based body)

Think Big

Well, since we're speculating, I'll go one further:

5. Full Frame sensor with ability to use legacy lenses

Will it happen? Of course not. But there are worse things to daydream about.

Indeed, that would be my preference, a first for the industry on both sides of the mirrorless market!

Of course maintaining four (Q,APS-C,FF,MF) lens lines may be a bit much. So I expect (and would hope) to see an APS-C sensor-size with full K-mount support.

My gut feeling, and it was expressed by others too, is that the K-r will be the last budget SLR model. Subsequent models will be EVILs. A december, 2011 date coincides with the K-r replacement date.

I think it will be an SLT/pellix like the new Sonies. They will call it mirrorless for marketing reasons as in some sense it is mirrorless. This will allow even smaller size and K-mount compatibility.

Along the same lines:

6. Small robot arm to enable auto-aperture and auto-focus on legacy lenses.
7. "Rewind" button that reverses time so you can get the shots you missed. ("Freeze tiime" only available in Japanese firmware.)
8. "Beer Goggles". Asahi Extra Dry can be poured into accessory B-GG1 to improve the beauty of your subject.

A full-frame camera from Pentax would be wonderful, but with the advent of EVIL, I'm wondering how long the reign of the DSLR will be...

I think if ever Pentax pushes the technology like the Q. The K will me much smaller body than K-5, but the lenses will be completely new using the "lens shutter mechanism" (maybe Pentax Lens Patent) (shutter built in to the lens). I see this experiment (Q) potential for the K's future.

Info is still need to know basis. =)

Between well informed retailers in London (some of whom have direct ties to Pentax UK) the rumour has been APSC K mount compatible EVIL.

For sure I'd like FF K EVIL ltd to with FA ltds. But I don't think it's going to happen.
I think what we will see, as suggested above, will be K-r replacement without mirror. Would be nice IMO, loose the grip, loose the pentamirror/prism hump and here we go. Slap on DA ltds and it would be fairly pocketable...

isn`t the Q mount big enough to have a next MILC body with bigger senzor and same mount? something similar, slightly smaller as u4/3 ?

I agree that #1 is the most likely but again I think it's interesting that so many of the choices are plausible. It's also interesting that the lens-shutter-mechanism that Kenn100D points out is the only one not already pursued by someone else:
1. K-based FF-sized mount with an APS-C sensor (NEX)
2. A fixed-lens mirrorless APS-C body (X-100)
3. A new mount based on the APS-C (NX)
4. Some form of (high-end?) fixed-lens p&s (Ricoh, Sigma)
5. Full Frame sensor with ability to use legacy lenses (future NEX)

And yet you participate. It's a lively year in camera land. ;^)

Flange focal distance is the problem there, so unless it's got some internal optics to deal with that (some amount of sharpness loss, maybe other lens characteristics changed) and assuming the NEX is as thin as it's possible to make a camera for E mount (18mm register) the thinnest such a K-mount EVIL could be is (45.5-18=) 27.5mm thicker than a NEX, so 67.5mm.

The K-r is 68mm thick.

My gut feeling is that it won't be - it's replacement will also have the good ol' mirror and optical viewfinder.

so 67.5mm.
That's quite a bit thicker than the mirrorless competitors.

I have to wonder if a new system-based model is really in the works after they've put five years into the Q system. Maybe it'll be a fixed-lens model. Surely the X-100 is attracting some attention among the other manufacturers.
