Possibly. Ricoh is larger in revenue than Hoya (yet still about half the size of Canon. )

The answer to all my questions. I'm right again...

Ricoh is rather marginal photo brand.

Hmmm...

...I don't want to rush to judgement but I have always been a little leery of Ricoh products ever since I was burned on one of their Mirai autofocus cameras in the 90's. Major POS and expensive. Labeled as innovative, but faulty in reality.

While everyone else is jumping on the mirrorless interchangeable lens platform, Ricoh has some weird variation where it looks like you not only change the lens but part of the body - maybe including the sensor? It looks like a recipe for disaster to me. And that is their flagship model no less.

If Ricoh is serious about the camera business it should drop its brand and put Pentax in the forefront and dump loads in marketing, R & D, production, and quality control. I think that there is the opportunity to challenge the big two or three for more market share, but Ricoh needs to recognize that Pentax cameras are not in the same league as their own. I don't see how the Ricoh brand can challenge the big players and win.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens. It seems to me that having both brands is not a good long term strategy for cost and product control reasons.

From Hoya: Through this acquisition, Ricoh plans to 1) enhance its digital camera businesses (especially the interchangeable lens camera market which is expected to grow), 2) create value-added businesses for taken photographs (creation and development of value-added services that encourage seeing, storing and refinishing photographs and utilize photographs as communication tools), and 3) expand to other fields (study of entry into the image archiving business using medium-format digital cameras and enhancement of security-related products)

MFD for image archiving??

Ricoh’s core business is office solutions focusing on MFPs, Ricoh has also introduced many cameras to the market since its inception in 1936. Ricoh was one of the first manufacturers to launch digital cameras in 1995 and Ricoh’s current high-end compact digital cameras are well regarded in the industry.

Now Ricoh aims to establish a consumer business. As a first step to achieve this goal, Ricoh
strengthens its camera businesses. Ricoh takes it as an indispensable initiative to obtain the small and lightweight interchangeable lens camera technology, lens technology and sales channels held by the Pentax Imaging Systems Division to pave the way for further advancement and innovations in the digital camera market. Through this acquisition, Ricoh plans to 1) enhance its digital camera businesses (especially the interchangeable lens camera market which is expected to grow), 2) create value-added businesses for taken photographs (creation and development of value-added services that encourage seeing, storing and refinishing photographs and utilize photographs as communication tools), and 3) expand to other fields (study of entry into the image archiving business using medium-format digital cameras and enhancement of security-related products)
Sounds promising...

Ricoh has an extremely large distribution network here in the states (for their current offerings of MFP's and consumer products). This could be a very good thing...

Official: Ricoh set to acquire Pentax camera brand and business, get serious about digital imaging -- Engadget

Just 124 million USD....

Closed all plants in Japan, discharged old lenses designers and then simpy sell for miserable sum in 124 million USD.

Can't be worse than having Hoya not care about the camera department right?
