I'm going to start a petition to bring back the Ricoh pin. I know it's gotten some bad press for getting stuck on our camera bodes, but really, who wouldn't want that little piece of metal? It's just added value!

Bring back the pin!

Haha.

Speaking from personal experience. My dad worked until he was almost 80. His friends that retired at 55-60 to play golf and lay about all day soon started wearing their underwear on the outside of their pants. Most of those guys died before the age of 70. My dad is still around. Some men enjoy work; keep your body and mind active and you'll be OK in your old age.
Good for your dad! But there's alternatives... Anyway, my point is declared moot by Ashahiflex's response. Jun Hirakawa being probably in his 50s means he could come back, if he's still at all interested that is...

Ricoh - Camerapedia

Are we seriously even arguing this?
I'd call that a long history, not a rich one. There aren't any stand-out products or milestones of the camera industry. They have been followers, not innovators, although the GXR is the exception to that. Anyway the company history is, well, history. Maybe their current management is willing to be different to the herd in which case they might be a good fit for Pentax.

The only thing they mention explicitely about medium format is the following statement under "Other benefits" in the Strategic Objectives part of the Ricoh Press Release:
QuoteQuote:
Possible entry into the image archiving business using medium format digital cameras
Note the "possible". At least that means they do not intend to kill it off without considering how it could be useful.

Ricoh press release: http://www.ricoh.com/release/2011/pdf/0701.pdf

It appears as though the will operate Pentax as a subsidiary. So far, all looks good.

I suppose the big gorilla in the room is what is Ricoh's relation to Sony?

The fact that Ricoh and Hoya say that they'll cooperate to increase the value of the Pentax brand makes me think that this is a precursor to a full merger. A combined Ricoh-Hoya would be a formidable presence in several markets.

This sounds very positive (from the Ricoh statement on the acquisition) :

Ricoh intends to maximize the synergy from the merger between Ricoh’s digital camera business and PENTAX Imaging System Business in various ways.
1) Strengthening the digital camera business
* Enhanced interchangeable-lens cameras to meet expected future growth
* Expansion of product lineup and interchangeable lens portfolio

Make no mistake about it, there is risk investing in the Pentax system for your photographic needs. Hopefully for my fellow enthusiasts and I, the risk will pay off.

1.5% market share is frightening. I didn't realize it was THAT low.

Change of the head department sure gonna bring a havoc for the first time. :ugh: But at least it's good to hear anything about lens lineup.

It's among all photo devices, including P&S. It's significantly higher for ILS though.
