Maybe it will be a K9 because it will eat all the competition alive. Personally I'm really fond of the K series because of my Fond memories of the K2 that I bought in 1975 and used for 20 years.

If the reintroduction of a K series is patterned after what they did then before they lost their way in the late 1980's, with ugly plastic bodies, they will cough with an "L10" or maybe an M10.

The K, L, and M are all model series of film cameras that Pentax introduced when they were riding high of the wave of success driven by their all time legend, the Spotmatic but seriously, if you look at the history of Pentax over 50years they have always COMPLETELY changed the name if they had a new body. Upgrades and spin offs will get some family difference moniker without a lot of rhyme or reason, and if it is a new design it gets a new name with only a random connection to the past.

IF half the hype is true about how different the 'next' will be--- Lets see--- new Sensor, new flash system, new ISO numbers, new live video on the screen, maybe digital zoom, major changes to the auto-focus.... Another axis to the SR, etc.---history tells us that the name will be from a random bag somewhere.

I heard from "people in the know" that it will be called Pentax D-matic.

Numbers

Assuming the K20D is the name and it is connected to sensor MP then th enew camera may have a 20mp sensor.

Then again, we ARE all assuming the K***D will be K number D, it might be K letters D

K"ist"D We know they loved that name
As long as they don't put in a "R"eally "A"dvanced "P"rocessors call it the K"rap"D

or the K "Hoya" D or KH20D

or

K mk1 D

If the name is connected to senzor MP then I'll go and buy the 100MP K100D right now!
As for new models, I'm waiting for a ME-2 camera

Pentax ME D, ME Super D, MX D, LX D, MZ D (!!!)... All is possible.
Pentax Z D... Ah, cool one... A red Z in italics... Zapf Chancery? That would be cool.

Pentax Z D "So you could zeee the difference Pentax makes"...
Pentax Z D "A Zen approach to photography, you meditate while the camera takes care of the picture taking".
Pentax Z D "Allows for the photography to happen by it self."
Pentax Z D "You and the camera become One, All That Is".
"If you have to ask what Z is, then you have not understood"

this is the name I will hold out for. The last time pentax was years ahead of the competition
and mowed them flat with one of the most successful cameras in the history of the company it was called the Spotmatic, and I think D-matic would be a better retro name attached to happier times than "Spotinpants". etc.

Yes. (See for example the K100 non-super, and the K110D for that matter.) We're talking about modern consumer electronics. I don't think they really even get a choice.

Well, the K100 non-super is understandable, but I mean, like the say the K10D and the K20D. It would make sense for Pentax to discontinue the K100 for the K200, but keep the K10D as another option and position the K20D with some of the other higher-end cameras.

I's say the opposite

Discontinue the K10 (saw its price anyway?) but keep K100D against D40/XT and put K200 against D40X/XTi.

Well the *ist DL lived on for several months after the *ist DL2 was released, I expect the same thing happen with K10D and K100D Super.

If they had given the super a larger buffer and RAW+JPG, that fight would have been a lot easier. I don't know how the market will look at the super throughout 2008, might start to be perceived as a bit long in the tooth. Perhaps it's replaced altogether so then it won't be a problem.

The D40 and XT will more than likely be discontinued soon.
