Good to hear JC, thanks for the update.
I do wonder, though, if commenting will be of much value to the gallery - sounds like it would turn it more into a blog. Popularity (by clicks or otherwise) would be better IMO. Nevertheless, a good move for PPG.
I'm not sure I agree with this. People are free to talk to one another in real life brick and mortar galleries about the works they are looking at, and currently there is no equivalent option in Pentax's web gallery. It is good to create a dialogue with the piece you are viewing and those who have also viewed it.

As long as it doesn't endup with some asinine opinion from someone that in realty is nothing but a snide derogatory comment disguised as constructive criticism. However, I do like to critic criticism.

Ah but in a real gallery any visitors are free to say whatever derogatory comments they want. It is the price paid for displaying work publicly. Gotta be willing to take it all.

But then I can spill red wine on them. Plus, not all photography isn't about trying to emulate painters etc. For that matter, some times the source of the comment is actually important. I would be more interested in what E.O. Wilson had to say about the macro of an ant than I would some abstract specialist.

It's fine to differ in opinion about it. To me a gallery is a showcase rather than a forum of comments on people's work. If we wanted high-end critique, we'd be going into fora like 1x.com. If we wanted something competitive, then we'd be going to dpchallenge.com. And this forum is just fine for showcasing work in the PYP section and garnering praise comments (and otherwise). But I do think the PPG should be a rated (not commented) gallery.

It's nice to see the PPG evolving. I had no issues with the Flash thing, but it seems a lot of people were complaining about that.

Some kind of rating is OK but what I would really like is more control over our own page with maybe the possibility to upload what we think are our best shots even if not accepted. Gives let's say 10 slots for shots we want to see in the gallery but were rejected.

The thing I really wanted to see improved is the voting process. Right now it's painful, it's slow, it doesn't let you skip categories you have no interest in or shots you have no opinion on.

I'd also like to see more categories: street for example.

Funny...I just submitted a bunch in the queue a few days prior to the site going on hold...the photos are still in the waiting lineup so I guess it will take over 3 months to see where they end up...ahhh well....c'est la vie.
Yep, I've had 5 awaiting decisions for several months now. It's worth it to get the updates to the gallery, though. I hope they also make the acceptance criteria a little tougher. The idea of PPG is really cool. My Canon-shooting buddies are envious of it.

I had an account there, but I never submitted anything because my aversion to flash based websites. Hopefully the new version will use standard technologies. Edit: No flash interface... nice.

Lack of flash... wonderful! Might be able to see it on my iPad now.

The other new features, good stuff. Increase in load speed has to be a good thing all round

The iPad pretty much seems like it was MADE to allow the user to flip through online photo galleries.

The submission process and voting were brought down due to some database issues. Anything we did to fix them would be a temporary bandaid. One thing about commenting, based on many people's experience with Flickr. Please can you either prevent or make the use of images in comments optional (ie at the photographer's discretion). In Flickr you get all sorts of prats who post 1 word comments against your shots with a huge graphic just to get their own stuff noticed. I always delete those and I'd rather not have to police another set. Programatically this is an easy add. Presumably you'll be adding stuff like 'tweet this' 'post to my wall' 'mail a friend' 'link to this photo' etc and maybe even more interesting stuff like 'make a collage' 'make a card'. These are all standard things to make the site more visible.

I'm always surprised that Pentax don't make more use out of the images there. You have all sorts of marketing and advertising channels and websites, I don't think it would hurt you to approach some of the photographers to use their images. Ie on the K-7 product page, rather than just putting a link to the gallery homepage it'd be sensible to actually have 20 or so shots there. Canon do this great thing 'wildlife as canon sees it' in national geographic, why don't Pentax do something like 'life as Pentax sees it' somewhere else. Or feature a shot of the day taken from PPG on other pages. Your photographers will love it and it's great marketing for your products. The move away from flash is a welcome change, not just for iPad compatibility but also speed and SEO. Combine that with faster loading times and it's all good. an iPad app version really wouldn't hurt (I thought I saw something about mobile in the email), Reuters & the Guardian have really nice ones already.

Will there be an iPhone app?

That's all that matters.

I don't know why people are getting fretful over commenting. You will be able to choose whether to allow it, or not...

Which means that all the ones you'd really like to comment on will have it turned off. Like the 46th in a row of the same girl in a cliche' pose.
