Pentax in Times Square NYC!

Well, RICOH actually. If they keep the Pentax name for cameras or even otherwise, does this mean more advertising dollar for Pentax cameras???

I took this pic and only later noticed the RICOH sign in this NYC Times Square picture...

The funny part about that picture is that it took me *ages* to actually see the Ricoh sign.

The last few times i've been to NYC, i've seen a Pentax logo'd truck driving around that made routine stops at some of the busier areas. The truck would then "unfold" of sorts and display the latest and greatest from Pentax. They would even let you pop in your own SD card and take a few shots using their cams. Not bad fro having a limited advertising budget.

The Time Square Ricoh sign has been there for many years. Recently Ricoh went all green energy to light the sign up. A first for Time Square. The Ricoh sign is located at 42 Street and 7th Avenue.

Yeah, there is, ...I remember dancing in the wee hours of a Midsummer night right about where that shot was taken. Kind of a special spot.

I miss dancing until wee hours, I really do. And that hat I had.

I am not much of a city person. But there is definitely a 'electric' sort of energy at Times Square.

It is mostly excited tourists milling about. An urban jungle. But the hustle and bustle and lights etc is something worth seeing...New Years Day must be something. Expensive to stay anywhere close though!

In my wasted youth long ago, I was stationed at old Ft Dix NJ, and took holiday pass in NYC. Some service organization, I forget if it was USO or Army-Navy Club or whatever, had a hotel very near Times Square with cheap accommodations for servicemembers. So I was right on the spot when the New Year's ball dropped. Cold, crowded, exciting indeed -- and I knew enough about pickpockets to keep my possessions inaccessible. The Square was decades away from being Disneyfied and so wasn't the current tourist trap (except for the ball drop).

Fast-forward almost a quarter-century to just before 2000, and I'm visiting NYC at year's-end again, staying at my sister's condo near her WTC office. The Square was much cleaner and tarted-up compared to previous decades, and was nearly unapproachable for the ball drop, despite sub-zero f (-18c) temps and blustery winds. Daytime energy was pretty low in the cold also.

I get real nervous with heated urban energy, especially when boosted by enthusiasm. Holy festivals in some Mexican and Central American cities can be frightening. Political gatherings are definite stay-away zones. I like my energy at lower levels, thanks. Or myself at a higher level -- like, on a 3rd-floor balcony, safely above the tumult. I think I'd like to do Times Square again from a platform atop a truck. Oops, make sure I don't bash my head on the Ricoh sign!

This is a bit off topic but it promenately features a camera so I guess it's germane.

I've been a big apple person for decades. Back about 20 or so years ago (before TS got all squeaky clean) I was there around Labor Day. Then, as now, the US Tennis Open was in full swing. I observed a yuppie tourist couple, dressed to the nines in bright white tennis type outfits taking in the sights. They looked like they had just stepped out of an LL Bean catalogue. I'll call them Brad & Buffy as they certainly looked the part. They were carrying a nice looking big Nikon. It seemed that they wanted a photo of themselves with TS in the background. Brad sets up the camera. Every low life and drug addict and con artist went on point like bird dogs at a field trial. Just before Brad sets the camera down on a convenient jersey barrier, the largest cabbie I have ever seen gets out of his waiting cab and says in a loud voice "anyone touches that camera and I'll eat them!" This guy is about 6'4" and built like a pro linebacker, and he looks mean enough to scare godzilla. Lots of crestfallen looks of lost opportunity. Brad put the camera down, completely unaware of the drama unfolding, joined Buffy, the camera goes "click" Brad picks it up and the two depart still unaware of the wonderful bit of street theater they provided me.

When I got my K-x I was in the city, so decided to stroll Time Square and do some street photography. Basically across the street from this sign. I somehow end up in a conversation with a drunk hooker, and she offered me a (armpit warmed) beer to take her picture.

It's a great place but I actually liked it better before it became NYC's version of Disneyland. That they renovated it to be family friendly actually kind of dismays me.

I always found the sleaze factor made it kind of interesting for people watching and when they did away with the porno theaters they also got rid of some of the best and oldest independent non-porno movie houses in the world. Some of those old theaters were from vaudeville days and they were really beautiful under the grime. I really wish I had been into photography back then. I could have taken some truly interesting pics there had I been.

I haven't been back to NYC since 1992 so I don't know if they saved any of the theaters, turned them into something respectable again, but I really hope so. Those old buildings were definitely on the historically significant side and while it was a shame the way they looked then, just tearing them down would have been a really awful thing.

This one old movie palace used to show classic and modern horror films all the time so my roommates and I used to go there a lot and you should have seen the balconies in the place. It looked like the Paris Opera House in there only it was much smaller. The balconies, the crystal chandeliers, it was just amazing...
