Neat!

Pentax will be using BirdFair this year to support conservation in Kenya by exchanging old binoculars as part payment for new, and then passing on the bins to Nature Kenya.

Pentax Imaging Systems will be encouraging visitors to the Bird Fair (19-21 August 2011) to get involved with its campaign to support Nature Kenya, which is the BirdLife International partner for Kenya.

The company is asking visitors to bring along working binoculars that are no longer being used, which will then be refurbished and given to Nature Kenya. In exchange for old binoculars, visitors will be given a discount towards the cost of a new pair of Pentax binoculars.

“We are delighted to be able to support BirdLife International via Nature Kenya in their aim to conserve birds and their natural habitats in Eastern Africa,” says Chris Brunen, Manager Business Unit Sport Optics, Pentax Europe Imaging Systems. “It is hoped that the binoculars will prove a useful tool to help their activities on the ground.”

The main mission of Nature Kenya – the East Africa Natural History Society – which was established in 1909, is to promote the study and conservation of the natural environment in Eastern Africa through its mission of ‘connecting nature and people’.

“The donation of working binoculars will be a tremendous help to us,” said Paul Matiku, Executive Director of Nature Kenya. "Not only will they be used by our own team across a wide range of projects but also to help equip volunteers from across the country.”

Pentax will be showcasing its full range of binoculars at Birdfair. Please visit home - PENTAX U.K. Limited for details.

Great initiative! Local organizations in Africa are often struggling to get tools, and (sadly) donating money is frequently not an efficient manner of support (as too many "commissions" are taken by intermediaries). This initiative is sure to be felt in the field where it matters.

Very good Pentax! Makes me want to trade in my binoculars as well. Shame BirdFair is not close enough to Belgium for me to attend...
