I don't think Apple did invent anything new at the hardware level with the iPhone. The major innovation with the iPhone and the iPad are the introduction of an userinterface which has been developped with the user in mind and not from an engineer or technician perpective. It was a bold step to step away from that standard way of development, but see what it has brought us.
And I agree with Polaroid not being in the list, they stepped away form the standard chemical process with film and came up with something reolutionary.

Except for the Brownie, Mavica, and iPhone, the listed cameras are all miniature format -- 135/FF and HF-size frames. No MF's -- no Hassy, no Polaroid, no TLRs, etc. Likewise, Instamatic is missing from the list, as are small-chip P&S digicams. And except for the latest digitals, no moving-picture cameras -- where's Bolex? As for the Leica 1: I would argue that the German 1934 Kodak Retina 1, the first 135/FF camera, had more actual impact -- it introduced the still-ubiquitous 135 film cart.

The author listed no metrics for his selections. But hey, it's all just fodder for the opinion mill!
