Who will make the next 645D Sensor?

Kodak: Death of an American icon? -- The Buzz - Sep. 28, 2011

Kodak is taking its last few breaths. When will CMOS technology move to MF cameras?

I read about it rescently. Well that is going down the drain.

I think when Ricoh asks Samsung to make a full size CMOS 645 sensor they will deliver it in 6 months. Price and numbers of production to take off is a different matter.

That's the buzz, yes but at the same time, coming from a website publishing such articles: How to survive a zombie apocalypse - (1) - CNNMoney

Someone will buy the sensor division. It is one of the few things making money for Kodak. Will they find a buyer for the film division? Who knows. If you're a film photographer get ready for your hobby to get really expensive. If they lose the Apple/RIM case the value of the patent portfolio will go way down.

I would like to see Ricoh buy the sensor section.

I think it's technically referred to as the "Zombacalypse"

Not sure if that is a good move or not. If Kodak had a strong CMOS sensor division then I could see the advantage, but if Kodak had a strong sensor division they might not be in financial trouble.

Kodak owns the rights and patents to a lot of different technologies in the photographic world. They have value, and the name has value. But they have drifted into irrelevance. Ricoh could make a big splash and it would be good to see that happen.

I still don't know the reasons for not having a CMOS MF sensor. We know they are cheaper, faster, & use less power (generate less heat). I know Samsung and Canon have made medium and large format CMOS sensors. The 8" x 8" CMOS sensor that Canon made is proof of the ability.

Who has insight into why we have not seen a MF CMOS sensor for a general commercial use?

I'm more worried that Ektar 100 and other films will stop being produced without Kodak. That being said, sensors, their patents and a whole mess of other stuff will be quite valuable, even if Kodak goes under. Even if Kodak goes under, I'm sure Pentax has a healthy stock of the sensors for 645 already in storage.

Also, you're quoting CNN money. Not exactly the pinnacle of reporting.

No, CNN is not a very good source, but the stock price does not lie. There have been several articles about Kodak over the past year. The CNN one is just the most recent.

Kodak has such a big intellectual property, that i'm not worried about the reduction of their income related to their core industry.
