No. I found, while testing the Sigma 170-500 vx the old 400 that leaving out the zoom ratio allowed for more accurate framing in the sense of getting the critter in the picture. I can only do so much all at the same time, and zooming, focusing, aiming and timing the shot to get a good picture at the same time overwhelmed the wet ware.
This was taken with the 400 + 1.4X. Note the vignetting from the mismatch between the 1.4x-s and the 400. Note that if you overlay an aps-c sensor, the vignetting is outside the frame! BTW, this is scanned from a Fujicolor 400 negative at 1800 dpi, originally. took it before I had the stuff in the 4th line of my signature.
