It does seem likely, but it is just speculation.

This camera will be priced at around the current selling price of the K10D (perhaps slightly lower). Therefore the K10D will most likely be discontinued, to be replaced by the K20D (or whatever name it may have). Pentax's lineup at the beginning of 2008 will consist of the 6mp K100D, 10mp K200D and 12mp (?) K20D.
That also sounds pretty likely if the recent comments about the K10D being discontinued are true. (Except probably 14mpix for the higher-end "K20D" model.) I'm a bit surprised since the K100D (not counting the insignificant "Super" refresh) is older than the K10D and more in need of a competitive update. I wonder how much more they can push the price down.

Hopefully by Photokina 2008, we will see a full frame Pentax with either a 12mp or 14mp full frame sensor.
I still think the 645D, backburnered or not, will eventually be Pentax's answer to full-frame, if the market dictates that full-frame really does need an answer.

It should be possible for Pentax to improve high ISO noise with the K200D even if it uses the K10D's sensor. The D40X certainly delivers better high ISO performance with the same sensor and the D80 is marginally better as well. Pentax has had well over a year to improve the hardware and software for Prime and that should show at least some improvement at high ISO's. I'd expect a mild improvement and (hopefully) a return of ISO 3200. Perhaps we'll get lucky and some of those improvements will be available via a firmware update for the K10D (Hopefully including 3200, 1600 max has been a wall I've hit my head against several times).

My real concern is for the K20D's high ISO performance, since that will determine whether or not I buy one. I'm already unhappy with the leaked photos since they indicate that the Green button was moved to the *istD's awful location, rendering it near-useless when combined with a handstrap and merely awkward otherwise.

Don't worry, those were not leaked photos. The author of that web site clearly stated that the "photos" were his own creation based on rumors he read. Just that this message was not conveyed when the "photo" were posted elsewhere.

That's true about this, and the one with four Green buttons in a row, and it's true about the fake Sony a200, but these look pretty legit. I can be tricked, though — can you point me to the message/site which says those are fake?

Actually, only the full-body A200 shot was faked. The detail shots seem to be legit.

Yes, this is the one I am talking about, the one with 4 green buttons; that one was fake.
The K200D ones are real.

Super Duper!

The K200D will supposedly use the same 10MP Sony sensor as the K10D, eh?

It's looking more and more like the K200D will be more like the K10D Super, albeit with AA batteries and a smaller body.

Pardon me, I have to go don my hair shirt to distract and keep me from going insane until January 24th.

No, it really, really doesn't. It's clearly neither a "K10D Super" nor a "K10D Lite". It'll be exactly what the name K200D implies. Please read this linked post so I can quit repeating myself.

The k200d has now been announced, and unless I'm mistaken has the same CCD sensor that the k10d utilizes.

How is the IQ/noise level at high ISO shots for the k200d compared to the k10d's?

Hard to say, they kept max. ISO at 1600, so don't expect great improvements. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so best wait for some reviews.

Check out the K200d product overview

http://www.youtube.com/v/-74vSaL_YY0&rel=1

The K200d is positioned as slimmed down k10d with more point and shoot modes that will appeal to novice DSRL users.

At 3:12 in the video, "enhanced dynamic range option" is mentioned. Does this mean reduced noise at higher ISO compared to the k10d?

I need a compact DSLR with 10+ megapixel, and low noise at high ISO.

Seems like I'll have to use my k100d until the price of the k20d drops - maybe the fall of 2008 , and use a larger body than I'd prefer.
