Ricoh "will plug a gap in the market" in 2012

QuoteQuote:
“Chas Moloney, Ricoh UK marketing director, said the company is now preparing a new product that will plug a gap in the market, which will be unveiled in 2012.”
Source: Ricoh eyes growth with camera push - Marketing news - Marketing magazine

What does this mean?
  • Full frame Pentax/Ricoh body? Full frame is not a gap in the market with Canon and Nikon all having FF bodies for years.
  • Full frame mirrorless body? Not really a gap, unless talking about "affordable" full-frame mirrorless?
  • Some absurd, non-existent gap drawn up by sales/marketing such as between the Pentax Q or the Nikon 1?
  • High-end Ricoh P&S's?

Sounds like this concerns Ricoh's personal product line, not Pentax's. They have the M-Mount module for the GXR, maybe they're going to make a new digital rangefinder for the 99%?

It all depends on what "the company" stands for: a) Ricoh, b) Pentax, or c) Ricoh-Pentax.

A gap in Ricoh's coverage of the market, or a gap in the market which no manufacturer currently covers?

If it's the latter the only thing I can think of is mirrorless MF or mirrorless FF (discounting the M9). Otherwise all the maufacturers pretty much have everything covered between them. OK maybe a truly highend mirrorless camera (whatever sensor size) - but that's not exactly a gap in the market per se.

If it's the former it could be nearly anything.

Let's say that there is a glimmer of hope and the "gap" that Ricoh refers to is one that is in the photography market, rather than their own product-line gap. It would be awesome if it was a mirrorless FF and/or crop with new lenses that are the size that rangefinder lenses were. Ultrawide-angle lenses wouldn't have fisheye effect anymore and ultra-telephotos are also possible (i.e., >300mm). At the same time, it would be backwards compatible with all the k-mount SLR lenses.

What's known: Ricoh will fill a gap in a market in 2012.
What's not known: Which Ricoh? Which market? Which gap?
What we'll do with this: Speculate endlessly on what is meant.
What we need: Some inside information. Corporate leaks. More! More!
What we'll get: Maybe some hints. Maybe not. Tantalizing, eh?
What will happen here: Did I mention endless speculation?
How long to wait: I'll not hold my breath. Waiting is...

An economics professor of mine at university used to say: "It's not because there's a gap in the market that there's a market in the gap".

Because of what? Given a more moderate pixel count than the 645D, maybe someone can produce a more reasonably priced sensor.

If we assume that Mr Moloney means precisely what he says, "... a new product that will plug a gap in the market, which will be unveiled in 2012.", then the gap in the market will be unveiled in 2012. In other words, we have not yet seen the gap.

Or maybe it's the market that will be unveiled in 2012.

Pay no heed; it's just a digression into syntax on a quite Sunday afternoon in autumn ....
