Ricoh to make 16MP APS-C GXR zoom module

This is interesting news. So Ricoh release some news re' "their own product" for 2012 that will use a 16mp sensor. They obviously don't intend to back off in favour of Pentax.

From DPReview:
"Ricoh has added a 24-85mm equivalent zoom camera unit, based around an APS-C sized CMOS sensor, to its product roadmap. The roadmap on the company's Japanese site shows the module, scheduled for an 'Early 2012' launch, will be built around a 16MP APS-C CMOS sensor. Given the company's use of 12MP Sony sensors in its A12 modules, it seems likely this zoom module will be built around a version of Sony's impressive 16MP chip that underpins several recent Sony, Nikon and Pentax models. No details are given on price or aperture range"

Equivalent? To what? Does this mean it's actually a 16-57 (or 16-55) zoom? It'll be interesting to learn more about the optics.

I do not think they need to back off. The merger happened just now and they had no time to cooperate and use each others technologies for mutual benefits. Only in 2013 we can expect the Ricoh-Pentax synergy to be productive in both engineering and marketing. This is something Ricoh engineers worked on for several months and it would be shame to throw thay away just to please us.

I was afraid the new module could be equivalent of 40mm f1.7 or so, then my money would be in danger. I'm not interested in a zoom like this.

Depends on the size. That's the beauty of the GXR system - you can have a P&S module and a larger APS-C module and choose which to bring with you.

Sounds interesting, how big would this be?
Would be great if it could collapse down substantially when powered down.

Any word whether it would be constant aperture? It would need to be f2.8 IMHO to be worthwhile.

Interesting to see if this is f2.8 or f4 wich makes a lot of difference for the size.

continuous f/4 would be an already correct aperture in APS-C as far as weight is concerned, isn't it ?
c. f/2.8 would yes be some kind of revolutionnary, as well as conceptually not convergent feature.

I would not bet a dime on a constant aperture in this case. f2,8-f4,5 could be a good compromise in compactness and speed.

It's not a so-called "GR Lens" (high end module) so probably no constant aperture.

There's a Nikor 24-85 f2.8 - f4 lens test at photozone.de which has some nice mtf numbers for a 10 mpx body. I'm sure the numbers would be even better on a 16 mp sensor.

A lens like this would help the gxr compete with the likes of Nex lineup

Whether its called Ricoh or Pentax matters not to me.

Would i buy it? Nope, I'm hooked on the K5 and assorted lenses.

Pentax doesn't use Samsung sensors; they did in the past, in only 2 models.
Besides, the GXR is Ricoh's.
