The Register: K-5 second best DSLR of 2011

In The Register's opinion, Nikon's D7000 is the best DSLR of 2011, with the Pentax K-5 coming second.

2011's Best... DSLRs

Dolts. Their reasoning is weak because other than AF the K5 blows their choice away and costs less to boot.

I do not think it is the AF. There is nothing wrong with K-5's AF. It is probably just the brand name.

There's quite a bit wrong with the K-5 AF compared to the D7000, but I agree, especially in terms of ergonomics, the K-5 smokes the D7000 in a lot of areas.

Is this the same Register that proclaimed Fukushima a triumph of the nuclear industry?

That would be Lewis Page . (IMO the stories were good for an alternate point of view with facts to back it up, but in an exaggerative way, might have been the intention though. )

I'm not a troll, I genuinely have a lot of trouble with the K-5 AF. It's an excellent camera though and I don't pine for Canon/Nikon/Sony at all. I seriously have little to no luck following any moving object with AF-C on my K-5, even in fantastic lighting. That slight change in colour depth and dynamic range makes little to no difference to your shots (you try telling me you can see a 0.2EV difference in dynamic range between the K-5 and D7000, or 0.2 bits of colour depth). What does however, is the excellent build of the K-5, the trust you put in it and the way everything naturally falls to your hand. I hated the D7000 viewfinder, amongst other things about it. The DXO scores are crap for all I care. I know the K-5 feels better to use than any other camera I've tried. And that lack of frustration is what's going to make my pictures a whole lot better.

But the camera isn't without it's flaws, as we all know. I'm having a massive issue at the moment with the screen refusing to work unless I go into liveview first. And I've never had any luck with using AF-C on a moving object. It doesn't follow focus, it adjusts focus every now and then, which isn't all that helpful. I'd be better manual focusing. Plus my shutter release button has crapped out and doesn't have any springiness left, so it feels horrible.

Seriously, one negative statement about the K-5 and you're instantly a troll :| Chillax man.

I like your statements, once you explain yourself... sometimes I actually think I could do better with manual focus... I called you a troll because, sometimes a troll will come out with a one line statement that took no thought to toss out , just to see the flames rise... even if you didn't mean to be a troll, remember this is a Pentax forum.. explain yourself, no one will get confused about your motives.

Ya that auto-focus thing on moving objects is not cool. I'm with you. But my lens is f:4. I've always wondered if having a faster lens (more light) would help.

Very interesting comments. I'm am currently looking at a K5 to upgrade from a K10d in the hope I can get the focus on my Sigma 120 - 400 to work a bit better. Am I flogging a dead horse? (I'm not selling my Pentax gear thou !.)

Am I missing something here, I clicked on the link - the article ranks K5 #4 and the Nikon #5?

Yeap, your are reading right. The "Editors choice" has the highest? ranking at 5. (And here's me thinking "1st" was always the best too)
