I was going to pull the trigger on a K5 tomorrow, but maybe I'll wait. My Kx is a good camera, but not weather sealed and LOUD as can be!

Curious - with Tamron now offering rebates to reduce inventory of their K-mount lenses... do they know something we don't? (and of course Cosina dropped all of their K-mounts as well)

they must have heard something about nikon canon and sony as well since they are offering rebates on them as well.
In reality a rebate being offered signifys nothing aside from they want to drive sales in one of the slowest times of the year in retail

Cosina got out of K mount long before Ricoh even came along. Likely they decided it was better to devote the manufacturing capacity to a market they have more velocity in like the Leica m mount since leica lenses are always out of stock, or to support their m4/3 line they launched

Now, that's worse than I thought. They are all gonna die!
All but Olympus; they are safe since Tamron don't make lenses for m4/3

I keep trying to run to a cave.

K-5 with DA17-70:

But sometime it gets a little batty here on the forums.

K-5 w/ DFA100 WR Macro:

Still Pentax/Hoya needs to make some type of announcement with a few more details than the last couple of announcements on the direction they are hoping to go with Pentax.

It's a slow time of year for this sort of retail product - many people have emptied their wallets by, oh, roughly, December 24. There's nothing unusual in an after-Christmas sale.

Just look at the throng in Oxford Street on Boxing Day! Leaving aside the crime scene tape at Foot Locker, of course ....

No need to read anything special into discounts, sales, rebates, etc.

Unless Pentax is to release something completely different, like a mirrorless or a FF, I don't understand why some people think they would want to release an upgrade APS-C body next. K-R and K-5 still got the features that top the APS-C lines. AFAIK, Nikon D7000 and Canon 7D aren't much, if any better than K-5, but they are more expensive than K-5

The K-r does not even show up on B&H's website (I just check the new equipment section). So something in the intro-level dslr is needed. Only 4 K-5 kits show up under Pentax dslr at B&H.

Tamron ran these rebates last year - BUT they were for MORE money. So, perhaps they're MORE confident the system will be around now? Hmmm........

What I do know is that my K5 is a beautiful piece of gear and I can use it for the rest of my life if necessary............I'm sure all these doubts will be resolved over the next few months.....

We all need to take a chill pill..............

Because every camera will eventually be replaced. Because there is still room for improvement. Because of the AF issues. Because they can't just sit idle while the competition announces new cameras. Because they might want a higher than K-5-level camera. Because their engineers are working hard, and would like to see their hard work's results on the market.
See? There are lots of reason to replace the K-r/K-5

Didn't Ricoh announce a new module with K mount. Isn't that a best reassurance you can get. Beside, I think the K mount is biggest asset of Pentax and there is really no reason to stop using it. Even Canon users use K and M42 lenses from Asahi Pentax.

I totally agree, surely nobody thought K-5 will last eternity. I mean, isnít it normal to develop new things, which supersede the older models.

I need to note that neither Ricoh nor PENTAX have made any statement that would clearly indicate that the production of K-mount cameras and lenses will stop completely within the next few years. Nothing.

Rather, Ricoh stated very clearly in its press documents when it acquired PENTAX that it aims to push forward into the enthusiast and professional markets, and would use PENTAX to achieve this goal. Given that the K mount is such an integral part of PENTAX heritage, and that there is a non-trivial number of PENTAX users (especially with the success of the K-5), it certainly would not be in the best interest of PENTAX Ricoh to discontinue the K mount.

The K mount is here to stay, at least for the next few years. There is no reason to worry.
