Question regarding Pentax Lens Roadmap

I noticed that "in the future" Pentax has a DA 17-70mm planned. Is this still the case? Anyone heard any rumors? It would be a good range for me.

you don't need to wait for the rebranding...

Sigma - Lenses
Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC macro - Photozone Test Report / Review

Great lens, sharp, fast and well-built. A bit heavy, but it's really worth it.

I wouldn't mind exchanging it for a DA* 16-50 though

Yes, it is still "there" but it is so tentative that there is even no a preliminary image of it. See the latest updated official roadmap below:

http://www.digital.pentax.co.jp/en/lens/roadmap.pdf

Do note also that in the above latest roadmap that all the "tentative" release dates have been removed. So, afterall, we have nothing but just paperware! :-(

We don't rellay know anything about this lens. It could be a replacement of the kit lens, as much as a new DA* with fixed aperture and SDM.

In the latter case, it would be perfect for my needs.

Just wait a little bit over 3 more weeks, and a new road map should be out.

What has been said by Richard in another forum is (AFAIR)
  • SDM
  • /4 (yeah constant /4)

I do not remember if it was supposed to sport double AF or only SDM.

IMO this is clearly a 16-45 replacement.

The rumour concerning the 55-300 was no SDM and /3.5-5.6 so more of an extended 50-200.

Weather sealed or not?

I'm afraid you are right, but I hope you are proven wrong :-)
I'm sure there are many semipros who'd like some medium priced weather sealed lensens.

The seals do cost money to put into the lens. I would not expect any weather sealed lens at the prices of kit lenses.

It may be a great lens, but it is awfully slow for the price.

Be great if it was fixed at 2.8. By the time it's released, I'll probably have the tamron 28-75mm by then.

Depends... Let us say it replaces the 16-45, not the 18-55.
16-45 not a typical cheap kit lens, it is a more sophisticated design.

Anyway, this is speculations.

Yes but it is fun. Pentax might (but really I do not want to beleive it 'cos I'd be deceived later ) chose to put sealing on middle-end class lenses which would mean all but consumer cheap ones.

There are rumours of a sealed K200D so that would be very neat.
