If you look purely at what we're hearing from customers, there's a lot of demand for longer focal lengths. Something like 300mm f/2.8, something like that. As far as what's on the road map, it's not something that I'm able to share. That's where it seems the most demand is for us, is with the longer focal length. You just look at what we have available, that's definitely where I would say we have a hole that I hope we explore.
That is very positive, how about a 200-500/5.6 with the IQ of the 60-250 !

If you are using a telephoto for wildlife of distance shots, 300mm to 400mm is like choosing to throw both a 28mm and a 30mm in your kit. For those that have used both, for this type of work, it doesn't make that much difference. Having a 300mm and a 600mm I can see, but if you have already invested in a 300mm, what is the benefit in a 400mm? If you haven't invested in a 300mm....would 400mm be worth the extra cost over the 300mm? Probably not.

Agree with that Steve. Which is why a 500mm (or a 200-500) is of greater value. Personally I'm going to attach a K5 to telescope to give myself 900mm (incredibly sharp too) but it's definitely not a walkaround kit !

I have the DA*300 and I would like the next lens to be somehting like a DA*500 and at least a f5.6. My idea lens would be a DA*135-400 f4.0 with a dedicated teleconverter. Still I would buy a DA*400 and stop carrying the DA*300. Just something high-end and longer than 300 is needed. Still my guess is we will get the long kit lens zoom for the Q before anything else. :-)

Q was a bold move. I'm impressed that they were willing to take that step - it showed a big change in the recent Pentax culture.
Jumping off a bridge is a bold move. Performing seppuku is a bold move. No reason though to actually do either. Like the Q.

"Q is a big time failure but we must save our face by keep pumping blood until way pass flatline"...... "We bought Pentax cheap anyway"......

I am sure some might perform seppuku here if that could save the Q. Oh well... maybe not.

At least they acknowledge a 300 2.8 specifically
That's sad actually.
IMHO, a 300/2.8 is a thing of the past where film was slow and image stabilization the exception.

IMHO, the thing to do is Falk Lumo: A hypothetical Pentax DFA* 500mm F5.6 ED(IF) SDMii

I don't do birding or wildlife, and heck I'd get me a 500mm+ lens if they brought out a new one. I demand a big long lens so I can compensate for what I don't have~!

I'd support Falco's suggestion - the DA*400 was based on the fact that I have covered the 300mm with a zoom and in most cases it is still too short, so I thought 400mm might be enough. But you guys convinced me...

They should do a DA* 600/5.6. Much more useful IMHO!

(I used my F* 250-600 mainly at 600mm so I know how small is the difference between even 250 and 600mm...)

In my article, I considered and rejected the idea. I wrote: "a 600/5.6 would have to be 80%, a 500/4.5 100% more expensive".

At almost twice my projected price, the market for Pentax wouldn't exist anymore and after all, we would have to spent twice for just 20% more reach which more pixels bring to us more cheaply.

Falk:
Thanks for the link to such an interesting article. Purely in the interest of ornithological accuracy (I'm an ornithologist), and please don't be offended, but the bird in the photo isn't a goshawk (habicht, Accipter gentilis). It is a kestrel (turmfalk, Falco tinnunculus).
