Too high for entry-level.

The K-m was entry-level. the Oly EP-M1 is entry-level and EPL-2 as well, and they come with zooms which are far more P&S upgrade consumer-friendly than a prime.
well there is a zoom kit planned as well. with 18-55 i could see it at $50 less than the prime

It's launch price is higher than entry certainly but so was the KR. thre true entry for the market is frequently an old model selling at a ridiculous low price
compared to the Pen EPM1 this looks like a big upgrade in many ways (not the least of which is a much better sensor than even the OMD will have)
compared to the Sony the Nex 5 has the EVF option advantage but that is about it as far as I can see (excluding the mount any lens to use full manual but that won't matter to the P&S upgrader who will want AF lenses and simplified controls). I think the street price willlikely fall pretty rapidly to 749 with the kit lens of choice (18-55 or DA40) which put's it right at Sony's price
Q sells for $550 now in some shops

KR replacement will probably have the same sensor as this
K-r's replacement will probably have the same internals (sensor, Prime M and so on) in a DSLR body. Which seems perfectly fine.

Anybody notice that they've dropped support of .PEF in favor of .DNG for RAW?

That's a good thing. Ever since they've started to use compressed DNG, PEF stopped having any use, IMHO.

PENTAX - K-01 Black

I'm unfamiliar with the procs/cons of the different raw formats.
Is PEF considered in some way better than DNG?

I have used DNG because it seems a more common used file type.

The K-01 is 560G with battery and SD card, not the k-5. The k-5 is 740g with battery and SD card, if that's what you meant.

The DA40mm is 90G, so the XS version should be lighter.
But the K-01 is only a few grams lighter than my Ds and only slightly smaller; the shape of the handgrip and top half of the viewfinder hump being the difference.

This is even more disappointing than it sounded. This is not a mirrorless system but a mirrorless SLR.

I thought - and I'm not qiute sure - that the PEF resulted in smaller files than the DNG in the k-x (they used lower compression DNG or something), so that's why I use PEF. But I also understand that DNG has different compression types?

Sorry, I was quoting him when he wrote the k-5. He amended himself to say it was the k-01 not the k-5 that weight 560g.

There is no advantage to using PEF. There used to be, on older cameras that didn't support compressed DNG. Back then, PEF files were smaller. Now, there's absolutely no reason to use PEF, except if you have really old RAW conversion software that can't accept DNG files, but in that case, they wouldn't support a hypothetical K-01 PEF file either.

Just found out that this is very similarly priced to the K-5... I can understand the benefits, video and size wise and all that, but honestly? Why would I buy this over the K-5?

The K-5 has been out for more than a year and will be replaced in a few months. This camera with the 40mm XS is still priced less than the K-5 body only, and the price will only go down.
