The K-01 is not the K-r replacement. The GM of Pentax UK said it is "inevitable" that a successful line like the K-r will be replaced. I simply cannot believe that he means it will be replaced by a totally different class of camera (MILC vs DSLR) with a new and unproven design concept.
Regarding the discontinuation of the K-r with no replacement announced, this is common practice in manufacturing. You stop the line, retool, start making new product so that you're ready to sell when the existing supply runs out. Timing of the announcement is affected by inventory of old and new, and competitive factors. For example you may want to time the announcement with a prestigious event like a camera show, or you may want to scoop a competitor's announcement, etc. What you don't want to do is run out of product to sell, or harm the pricing on the outgoing camera too early.
Note also that hanging out in camera forums means you hear things long before the public. If you go into a shop today to look at Pentax, you won't likely be told the K-r is discontinued and most potential customers wouldn't have this news.
