Extra silent? Either it's silent or it isn't!

This is the very first time I've ever thought about changing brands. Pentax is replacing models by stripped down versions. KR went out and gets replaced by... this?? I'm afraid for their announcement in the higher-end category.

The only positve thing about this, is that they're keeping the K-mount... For now, that is. Because if they're stupid enough to get rid of the OVF, then what's keeping them from getting rid of K-mount in a few years?
I don't really see it. The K mount will be here as long as it is useful for Pentax to keep it, but as long as there are upper end SLRs out there, I think the K mount will stay.

This doesn't look particularly like a stripped down kr. It is a significant step up except for the EVF versus OVF. The kr autofocus has not been that great anyway, I can't imagine that this would be that much of a step down from that -- certainly accuracy would improve.

Unlike most of you (it would seem), I'm actually hoping that it does indeed feature a bold, modern industrial design. The camera world is ready for its iMac.
An iMac is a terribly overpriced, but pretty, PC with an OS installed that brings you lots of incompatibility problems...

Yes, the cameraworld is ready for that, but lets give the Canikon guys the honour of throwing in their own windows. And let them degrade their highly functional specialist tools to pretty gadgets for ladies purses.

Exactly. So if they really have managed to make a K-mount camera that is only 49mm thick, I think it might be very interesting indeed.
59mm is what I read.
As I posted, this is very close to the K-x depth (63.5mm) if you measure mount to LCD.

As long as form follows function in the design, and it's not too obtrusive, I will be happy... I'm a bit put off by all that brushed steel with primary colour touches in the designers portfolio though

I sincerely hope he sat with an MX on his desk asking himself 'how can I make something like this for the 21st Century?' And that it's available in black

Have you been away since the nineties?

My iMac at work is the most compatible machine you can imagine, in fact it runs OS X, linux, Windows XP and Windows 7 simultaneously...

Moreover, if the lens offerings are pancakeish small, then the decision has been made NOT to compete on body size a la NEX and m43, but focus on small, fast glass while retaining backwards compatibility.

Mount depth does not make or break consumer appeal because on virtually all of these systems, once you add a lens, the camera is nowhere near "pocketable" (and oversold concept appealing to many fewer consumers than the rhetoric would have us believe).

This is mostly about EVF vs. OVF, video, and the other benefits of mirrorless, without getting into a size war.

All hypothetical of course, but certainly a lot better than the costly Ricoh module concept.

It's very similar thickness to DSLR. Falk, in your opinion is there much scope to reduce that thickness in the future to something closer to a film SLR (49mm say). Sensor assemblies can only get thinner in the future, right? Perhaps removing the SR mechanism would reduce thickness too?

Maybe this camera is a first step, acknowledging there will probably be scope to miniaturise further in the future. And I don't think you need to go any thinner than 49mm, which is roughly what the MX is.

You're aware that that is a very old prototype?

If this camera has CDAF focusing, does that mean that existing K-mount lenses won't work all that well on it because they are designed for PDAF?
this is something I'd like to know too

*rolls eyes* Yes, that's why they're the largest computer manufacturer in the world.
