Probably because the new lens protrudes into the body.

There not being a mirror in the K-01, lenses can be mounted a lot closer to the sensor, but the actual mount must be at the same distance as in a DSLR if the camera has to be compatible with the existing K-mount lenses.

So if you make a lens that sits half way into the camera body (where the mirror is in a DSLR), you can attach it to a K-mount and make it stick out much less (because only half sticks out). Of course, you could mount such a lens onto a K-mount DSLR if it weren't for the mirror which will be in the way.

Hence this lens will be K-mount but only for the K-01.

If there was a way to lock the mirror up, such a lens could also be used on a K-mount dslr.

Forgetting that mirror lockup would be complete horror though.

The only puzzle is why to choose the 40mm, that is very slim as of now, to be adapted to sit halfway inside the mount, losing just a few millimetres of thickness, when they could have done it with the 35/2,4 (or a new 30mm lens) that would be much useful as a fixed kit lens and would show much more deeply the advantage of not having a mirror. The ideal would have been a new, symmetrical version of the 24/2.

I guess the designer wanted to retain the 'brick shape' as much as possible. The DA40 is indeed already one of the smallest pancakes; I guess he wanted to make it visually the smallest of them all despite the still large K-mount to sensor flange.

Anyway, we're up to some very interesting news in the coming days. I hope for an early leak

The outside of the mount itself could, if it projects a few cm past the body, have a manual focus ring with electronic linkage to the lens. Having the XS lens mounted *within* the throat of the lens mount might allow it to be really well sealed as only the front element would be exposed...

XS = eXtremely Sealed? Digital Nikonos? The rubber coating and rumoured deep recessing of the kit lens suggests this model might be beyond 'ruggedised'....

I would bet that the rest of the DA limiteds would be given the same treatment in the future for this camera. Clearly, they are going to have some kind of in lens motor, if they are going to be able to be used for video. Pentax is then going to sell the camera as a unit, saying to purchasers that the camera combined with various (available) lenses is quite small, even if the body itself is just a little larger than NEX or similar cameras.

The Pentax full frame DSLR and mAPS-C mirrorless camera rumors are back. I received several new tips on those products.

After it got acquired by Ricoh, Pentax is reportedly determined to provide a full range of cameras, including a new full frame DSLR and the upcoming K-01 APS-C mirrorless camera. A Ricoh representative recently said that they “will plug a gap in the market” in 2012. The full frame Pentax camera is rumored to be announced later in 2012 (either in May or for Photokina in September).


The new Pentax K-01 mirrorless camera is supposed to be build like a brick, literally - you should be able to place on a table in landscape or portrait position without a tripod. Pentax has said in the past that they like to do things differently:

"if we decide to do something in this respect has to be different, and it is not easy in the current context, to do something that is different and good…”

All Pentax FA lenses will work on the new K-01 with the exception of few models.

That should probably have read "AF" and not "FA". There is the old SMC Pentax AF 35-70mm f/2.8 which only worked with the Pentax ME-F.

(BTW: the ME-F was the first mass produced AF SLR, despite the success of the Minolta 7000).

Indeed, but stating "the K-01 works with every Pentax AF K-mount lens" would then be false.
