It's not really the sensor, but the software running it, IMO...
I bought a Samsung NX100 (150€, a bargain!), and, while using the same sensor as the K7, its liveview is miles ahead!!! Refresh rate is nearly instantaneous, and focus is quite quick, even in low-light.
So, I don't know how pentax could have butchered their sensors' live feed so much, when I see what another company can squeeze from the same thing...
