I'm a little curious what they were thinking though. EVFs seem to be a trend in "prosumer mirrorless" these days (nikon, sony, olympus, panasonic, fuji, even ricoh (!) all seem to have an EVF as at least an option on their PSM cameras), so obviously there must be some demand for them....
Maybe (hopefully) a hot shoe EVF

Yeah, a shame about the lack of EVF.
But... what if it is compatible with the GXR VF-2 viewfinder?

yes, I think so, as an upgrade from a P&S without wanting to sound sarcastic.

I think the design is lacking in terms of on/off switch and mode button. I can see why they turned the leaver to the right, rather than let it stick out the front like in the K-x. If it was sticking out the front one could easily knock the mode button to another setting when switching off, more though than switching it on.

The only thing I'm worried about usability-wise is accidentally pressing movie record (the red button) when I mean to press exposure compensation. They're pretty close.

Is that what it is, yes, that would be a hassle, stopping the process, deleting the bit of movie, refocusing again...

And the sensor sits right there when the lens is off, is there no curtain anymore?

No EVF, no pluggable hotshoe EVF

No EVF, no pluggable hotshoe EVF option.

From the Russian press release photo, I cropped the relevant region which would have to show an additional plug for an add-on EVF: none.
(the middle third of the hot shoe socket itself is indented -- but this is standard for any Pentax hot shoe -- as are the 3 dents in it)

The cropped region additionally includes the upper edge of the LCD, where an EVF would have shown up.

Are you dead sure about this?

This is not a good picture of the K-5 hot shoe but looking at the K200D I have handy IRL, those things (and I'm not even sure they are contacts) aren't there.

I think Pentax would have been very silly not to have the option of a plug in EVF.

If those additional marks on the hotshoe above are EVF contacts it doesn't necessarilly mean one will be available at launch though.
