This is not a good picture of the K-5 hot shoe but looking at the K200D I have handy IRL, those things (and I'm not even sure they are contacts) aren't there.
Not dead but sure

My K-5 has the same "things". They are bolts (sort of screws) where a fraction (about 1/4) remain visible from above (actually, if you use the 100% version from the Russian site, you can spot a screwdriver dent in one of the bolts). It is part of the mechanical hot shoe assembly and K-01 and a silver K-5 look 100% identical. With a black K-5, it may be more difficult to see though.

I know, hopes die last. But rest assured, they die too

Yeah, personally I don't care about EVF's at all, I just found it an interesting difference. Never mind then.

There's NO point. That's what makes it a design fail.

Form follows function. Newson and his team have decided that form trumps function.

I should add that it's definitely not Newson's fault that there is no EVF, that was surely part of the brief. But it IS the designers' fault that it looks like there should be an EVF.

Yes, essentially this looks to be a cheap way for Pentax to develop a new body by reusing much of the K5's internals. There doesn't appear to be anything new here.

Edit - unless Pentax has developed a couple of gimmicks for the firmware, e.g. image processing things. Athough I guess the video is one area where we might see a tangible improvement...

Concerning a rudimentary EVF: How much data could be transferred through the normal "flash pins"?

Personally I think this'll be awesome, as a video back-up camera that's smaller and lighter than a lot of rival cameras with a comparable selection of native lenses. The video better be fantastic though, and AF has to be worlds apart from the K-5. BUild quality must be very high, and a good selection of ports is a must. No HDMI output on this makes it dead in the water for me. I think the big difference this will have is that the huge body (compared to other MILCs) can house a full size battery, which will set it apart and actually make it usable on longer shoots. I wouldn't use an EVF with video anyway, so no loss there. And I actually love the look, I think Marc is a fantastic designer.

Definitely not meant to replace the K-r though, so we'll see what happens there in the future...

No OVF or EVF. What were they thinking?

I don't mind the camera per se, but it will never be part of my kit.

The video crowd seem to have been well catered for, possibly at the expense of the still shooters.

It certainly hasn't caused any rifts in my relationship with my new love, the K5.

For someone moving up from a P&S, this surely gives them access to a vast collection of lenses and accessories. Not discounting a mighty powerful sensor, SR, and HD video.
I like it. Waiting for the reviews...

Full HD 1080p video capture at 30 FPS with h.264 compression (60 FPS at 720p) features shutter speed and aperture exposure control, video autofocus control, and a built-in mono or external stereo microphone.

The users of NX100 and NX200 who bought EVF uses it very rare or simply put it into table...I've contacted with Samsung users at Russian forum.
EVF is hardly to find in shops. The answer: no demand.

NEX-3 and NEX-5 have no too...

Please, let this be Pentax getting the last little bit of Hoya out of it's system.
