I think the best news is that there's new development! A TC, telelenses, new wide angle. I think the new DA* zoom could be a 16-80 like Sony has. The limited zoom could be a new 20-35 and the telelens 100-400. I hope the new DA standard Lens will be a 50 1.7 (or 1.4) with the some AF system as in the 18-135 WR.

I heard that it slams the battery down to 1/4 upon mounting.

The Pentax Imaging site says this about the DA 40 XS

Similar info is on the BH site.

LOL. Welcome to, oh I dunno, 2002!

I know. When Hoya bought them and brought out the K-7 and 645D I thought there was a chance Pentax might get serious again. When the K-5 came out I though things are moving in the right direction.

I was even willing to over look the rainbow of colors that people refer to as the K-x and K-r.

Then the Q was introduced, but that's OK even good companies screw up every now and then.

Now we have the K-01. It's ugly. If it was made by TONKA I could see where it fits in the line-up for a toy company.

Now I see a lens line up that is void of any fast primes or DFA lenses. More zooms that overlap the existing line-up.... only slower and made of plastic. ONE DA* LTD zoom of interest and a 1.4x TC that was on the lenses road map 5+ years ago and still has not made it to production.

At least i know what target market Pentax is aiming at.

When you're birding....1200mm on APC-S is too wide. I use my 1.4 and 2.0 converters quite often.

The real question is, who is going to be crazy enough to plop down 7 to 10 grand on a 500 mm lens with SDM? And even if they do a complete overhaul of the SDM drive, if they don't give an option to use the screw drive, it would be a long time before I would chance it.

For those moaning about the absence of DFA lenses, do you really, really think Pentax should advertise such intentions months if not years before release?
Why not giving exact specs of lenses and bodies to competing companies when you're at it ?

Times are difficult. But doing so would ruin their slim chances.

The "fuzzy" start and end points of the "DA* Zoom" are certainly compatible with a full format 24-70/2.8 standard zoom :-)

After sleeping on the lens roadmap. I can not really remember too many of the lenses on it. So I guess I am got really excited about that many. I do remember the DA55 and the DA135-400. I do wish they were high-end lenses so I will have to wait and see how they test out and handle in the hands of actual users. If not that good there is always the Sigma 500/4.5.

Another thing I remember is a lot of zooms in the wide angle range without any of them getting to the super-wide range. I guess it will be a Sigm 8-16 for me. Also the lack of a fast, sealed, high-24 and a fast, seal, high-end 29+-. Back in the film days the 35mm and the 43 were classic must have lenses and we haven't got their replacements yet.

Still it is nice to see a lens roadmap even if for me personally there was not that much need to buy lenses on it.

Please bring back the FA* lenses in DFA* versions. Just encase Ricoh is looking at this thread.

I will if the IQ is high enough and the lens is fast enough. But then I am a crazy person.

If you have Q, the crop factor of 5.5 will make it a 3025mm lens when attached with the 550mm. No need to buy a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope for astrophotography anymore. Well, unless you want to do deep sky imaging or something of that sort...
