Jeez - so about the same price over here as a K-5. That's realistic...

(we get reamed over here, usually $=£ regardless of exchange rate)
Imagine what it was like for us when our currency went down to US$0.55 a few years back! Now we're at US$1.07 and I'm broke.. I can't win any which way...

I'm shocked that there' no EVF.
The closest analogue to the K-01 is the NEX family. But note that NEX went through a product evolution like so:

- NEX-3 (14MP, 720 video, no OVF/EVF)
- NEX-5 (14MP, 1024 video, no OVF/EVF)
- NEX-C3 (16MP, 720 video, no OVF/EVF)
- NEX-5N (16MP, 1024 video, external EVF optional, no OVF)
- NEX-7 (24MP, 1024 video, integrated EVF, no OVF)

K-01 is probably the start of a new product family and can be expected to grow and evolve, including no doubt models with more features and options.

Everybody is saying it's ugly - I don't get it. Ugly in my book is this:

It's bulky, it's heavy and it's full of buttons. The K-01 seems the opposite: it's compact, seems to afford (fit) really well in the hands and the button layout makes sense. Besides, it's remarkable, doesn't look like all cameras in the market, which is probably what the designer aimed for.

By the texture and weight, it seems to be alloy. Hope it's WR, that would be killer.

Now, what I don't get is: no viewfinder? There wasn't a full photo of the backside yet, but if it's LCD only... boy, will be a huge letdown.

Couldn't agree more! Absence of a VF would be the only drawback for me... I really cannot use a camera without a VF, optical or not.

I do like the look of the K-01. What I think is ugly is that recent Nikon EVIL, but just a matter of taste.

If it has the sensor of the K-%, allows the use of K Mount lenses, is relatively small, but not too small, the only thing it lacks, really, is the VF. Or perhaps not, let's wait and see...

Let's hope that kind of evolution is quick. I'd hate for them to take a couple of years to flesh out the range.

Looks like I'll be without a camera for even longer then as I save up for a K-5 (presumably buying it a week before it's discontinued for the K-4 ) I was hoping this would get me back in the game but no VF is a showstopper for me.

Absolutely! One of the first things you do in a project is look at lessons learned from similar projects - they should have followed that development and cut straight to the chase, every generation they lack features that exist elsewhere they shed potential customers to those other systems.

So they should have made it into NEX-7 then, and charged $1700 for it?
That is unrealistic.

Save it for the trolls, throwing mud at dedicated Pentaxians is unbecoming.

The users of NX100 and NX200 who bought EVF uses it very rare or simply put it into table...I've contacted with Samsung users at Russian forum.
EVF is hardly to find in shops. The answer: no demand.

Apples and Oranges. Pentax owners are used to viewfinders. The only Samsung user I know is a PnS upgrader who won't buy an additional lens, let alone spend money on an EVF.

Not even having an optional EVF is making the same mistake that Sony and Olympus made with their initial milc. It took just a few months for Olympus to come up with the e-p2. It took just less than a year for Sony to fix their mistake.

It isn't that Rich doesn't make an evf for the GRX. They should have dug a little deeper into their spare part bin.

No, they should have made it a more compelling option to the NEX-5N. In all ways other than price and EVF option it is.

They missed the one great advantage of being late to the game: Seeing what works and what doesn't. Sony moving towards EVFs tells you something.

I'm sure more models will follow and address any shortcomings.

Well it does sound like it might have clean hdmi out which will make the video kids happy. If that is the case it would be good to stock up on manual K and m42 glass starting yesterday.

If the release price is ~600 dollars, I think it is basically what the Q should have been. It has SR, has the ability to auto focus all autofocus K mount lenses, and from a price standpoint is quite reasonable.

I haven't used a NEX 7, but from what I can tell, it is roughly twice as expensive as this camera will be. If Pentax can get some type of optional EVF for this camera, I think it will be about perfect. Not saying I will get one -- I probably won't, but I am not particularly attracted to the NEX 7 model either.
