The price is a relief for those of us waiting for a K-5 replacement!

I was afraid that they were going to the route they took going from the K20D to the K-7 — the new design is the successor, and those waiting for a "K30D" as well were waiting in vain. But with an $800 price point, there's clearly a higher-level product in the pipeline too. Cool.

I think this is actually the K-r suscessor. If this is what their offering the sub $1000 market, what is comming in the $1500 - $2000 segment?

I hope if there is a replacement for the K-5 coming soon, it is closer to $1500 than $2000. I cant imagine what Pentax could release that would warrant $2k unless it was something mind blowing. When was the last time we saw that anyway?

This isn't an SLR, how can it be a successor to anything at this point? IMO it's something completely new which will appeal to an entirely different group of people. The SLR fans will have to wait until more is announced along those lines!

There are already leaks of a K30/300 coming soon as the replacement for the K-r in the Pentax lineup. The price point on this is nice and I can see the street price coming down to $599 quickly if past trends are any predictor here.

I also can't see this as the K-r successor. If it is, that's a mistake. They won't really be in the entry-level SLR market any more.

I actually think it's kind of cool for what it is. The price seems reasonable for the amount of camera you're getting. The lack of a viewfinder is a real downer for me, but for people coming from point and shoot, it's probably not a consideration. I didn't understand the viewfinder fuss until I actually used one.

it's more like a budget/entry level K-5 without a viewfinder also a mirrorless one. if the IQ and AF performance is significantly better than the K-5, then it is a great camera for the price of $650.

I can't imagine the IQ to be "significantly" better than the k-5. It's the k-5 sensor. Maybe the jpegs out of the cam are better because of the new image processing engine...

But the Video is better by far. Even treating it as a high end K-mount Video camera that takes wonderfull photographs, makes it a bargain to me.

Yes, the video controls are much better, and the audio options are better. However, the IQ in the stills are going to be equivalent if a little better - the k-5 was always capable of great video quality, just lacked the controls and had weaker framerates.

At half the price of the k-5, this is quite awesome as a video camera for our crowd.

It completely baffles me how a mirrorless is a replacement for a DSLR.

That can be expected, I would be amazed if it was "significantly" better though - my understanding is that Pentax sucked out practically everything out of that sensor that Nikon and Sony couldn't.

possibly. but it seems the NEX-5n does appear to have better sharpness in the comparisons made between it and the K-5. I dont know if it is due to better focusing accuracy or microlens array of the NEX-5n or aggressive sharpening applied. but if the K-01 would dramatically increase the number of keepers and sharper images better than the K-5 could, I would not complain about it. is there focus peaking for the K-01?
