Pentax 560mm ?

My unscientific calculation (resized the image to match the barrel size at the mount of one of my lenses, put up to screen and moved it along the image) I got somewhere around 22 -24"

And the hood appears to be collapsed in this picture so add another 6" or so.

The switch on the side. Could it be a focus range limiter?

K500/4.5 was 440mm or 17.32 inches.

the old canon EF600 4.5 was only 18 inches and looks similar in size (the 800 5.6 was also 18" or so). so 22-24 inches may be a little long. probably about 18" at the max maybe a little more if the built in hood is long

It is difficult from the pictures to see the mount clearly which is a fixed known size. Using simple photogrammetry, the length looks like between 18 and 20 inches.

Why does it end up longer than an FA*600mm f/4 with a shorter FL and smaller aperture?

That ★ doesn't belong there. If you look at the photos of the lens on the Pentax site, there's no star, just DA.

I compare again.
More carefully. I think - now has a more accurate value.
560 length with hood equal to exactly two lengths of DA 300mm F4.0

Geez guys, stop moaning. An affordable long tele is good news for Pentax users.
If they go out right now with a 300/2.8, it wouldn't sell (but forums, I know).

They need to build momentum, and that's what Ricoh does. If I ever buy such a lens, it will be a DA, not a DA*. No way I could afford a DA* Tele.
