Would be an AF/MF switch, and most likely Quickshift focus colar, the switch on the lens so you can easily go to MF without having to move your hands from supporting the lens. Hopefully it has a focus limiting switch, close-mid, mid to distant, all.

Could be another notch or something. I don't think it makes sense to have it so shallow.

Good eye. Wonder why it needs an alignment dot. Maybe it is removable too?
The right alignment dot is meant for the tripod mount. As we can see the lens is rotated 90 degrees to the left so that we can see the distance scale window. In a normal position the right dot will be aligned with a dot on the tripod mount.

Just need to see the price tag on this bad boy and when pre-orders are being taken.. made for APS-C makes me wonder about vignetting on FF down the road though..

Again, the "made for APS-C" statement is 100% sure bullshit. It makes no sense and the lens seems to be much larger than Sigma's 500/4.5, so what benefits would that give?

I agree, being larger than the 500 f4.5 and made for APS-C sounds like a big load of crap.. if they were truly made for APS-C the lens should be about the size of say.. an OLD Vivitar 400mm f6.3 or so.. especially in a fixed focal length design. Much like the difference between say and FA 43 Ltd and a DA 40 LTD XS.

I generally agree with above statements. Image circle doesn't matter if it becomes much smaller than the focal length and significantly smaller than the aperture. Which is the case here.

However (and the large length is just another indication), astronomical optical designs tend to be rather simple, working at low apertures (like f5.6 or f11) and only being corrected for center and infinity focus performance. So, the performance may drop off quickly enough to restrict it to APSC. Just another hint for a budget tele.

Don't get me wrong, I do still hope for a great long tele from Pentax. I just analyze the hints as they are coming in.

btw, the Sigma 500/4.5 is bigger than the DA 560/5.6. The Sigma is shorter but bigger overall.

Yep, unless you guys know how the optics are arranged, you can't really judge anything...

But, right now, I see an image of a SMC Pentax-DA lens.. thus it's for APS-C and it's huge... can't say anything till more information comes out, right?

Note the scratches (already!) on the barrel, the switches and the tag on the side.

Pure speculation, of course...

Yep, this is a pre-production unit and not necessarily even functional, I don't think we should be judging the quality of the finish from this photo.

I think the scratches indicate that it was already very heavily used in the field (field testing).

Yeah, I heard it too: Using a tele lens in the field as a flail for threshing corn is bad for its finisch

But you know very well what I mean. Any supertele will quickly show "battle scars" because of the sheer size you'll hit anything even if you don't want to. (Believe me, I have owned both the Sigma 500/4.5 and the F* 250-600mm f/5.6 ED [IF].)

The scratches are placed at a position, where the left screw would be tightened, if the left part of the lens would be collapsed like that:

Whether or not this really is only the hood:

grooves

I believe the greatest hint of the collapsibility of the hood are the grooves in the barrel just in front of the tripod mount. It looks like a lock position for the lock screw on the hood. I know, one lock screw usually means one groove, but the screw might not be in direct contact with the surface. It might tighten a clamp that fit those grooves.

Excuse my track pad painting.
