I always thought that a prime lens without any TC would have better IQ than that same lens with a TC.
Even if the lens is a 300/2.8: if it is excellent on its own, will it be just as good, IQ-wise, once a 2X TC is attached to it?

Wouldn't a prime 560/5.6 with no TC be the best way to go?
That is a generalization that may not hold up in real life. It greatly depends on the quality of both lens and the TC.

IMHO (based on peliminary information as of today) the Pentax DA 560/5.6 is a tele prime lens at a good price point (sub $2000) which rivals the optical performance of much more expensive glass, near the center and at infinity focus, good enough to be used with a tele converter and with good clarity and contrast. OTOH, the lens is very long (and possibly heavy) and the performance will degrade towards the edges of the image field which makes it better suited for APS-C than full frame although it most likely would cover a medium format image circle. Or all in one: Be Different
And can be put on 645D if that would work (adapter needed).

You generally get better IQ with a teleconverter than without one and cropping to the same field of view. Optical magnification is better than digital.

I ran two tests on this over the past week... one was definitively better cropping, and the other was inconclusive.

Cropping vs. TC is my method to test tele lenses. The good ones win with TC, the lesser ones loose.

E.g., my manual focus Sigma 500/4.5 wins which was positive surprise.

Um, I wasn't I have no intention of getting the Sigma 500/4.5, too rich for me!

Any way , how big WOULD the 560 be collapsed theoretically?

Agree Falk, it certainly shows up even a minor flaw.

Not quite a one to one comparison, but I finished converting over my Leica Telyt-R 560/6.8 to K-mount. Here's the lengths to get people thinking:

Fully retracted - just over 23" on my K-r:

Fully extended - 28" on my K-r:

Didn't get converted until this evening, so will have to post some results after daylight tomorrow.

zzaletel - thanks for posting those shots. Interesting. Though I believe the lengths of the lens alone should be 21" and 26" as the mount does not extend into the camera.

Frogfish - true, though obviously this lens does not collapse in the same fashion as the Pentax one will. All of that being said, the min and max length while fully assembled are between those ranges for the Telyt, not including the camera body.

Worse than that--- we have been looking at a mock up and speculating on the features.

I NEED this sort of focal length ... been wanting it for a long time.

Somehow though, not sure why, I am "cautiously suspicious" about:

1. the final specs ... what will it REALLY be?
2. the final price ... launch price.
3. the timeline for releasing it ... 2012? Really? I would use it now hopefully not in one year!
4. the IQ of the said lens ... hoping it will match that of my DA*300/4. Is this too much to expect?

"Suspicious" as in "not quite sure what to expect but I don't want a nasty surprise" ... I'm sure that goes for just about everybody else here, right?

Paranoia?
