These pics are soft enough to prove Falc's point.

They were all uploaded to this forum. Depending on the size of the original the forum's server may have resized/compressed them, and the forum is notorious for softening the images significantly when it does that.

If you used a so-called focal-plane adapter, you'd see the native properties of the PF-80ED.
Unfortunately the PF-CA35 is the focal plane adapter. None of the Pentax PF spotting scopes have enough focuser travel to allow prime focusing with SLR. It is too bad because the optics in those scopes are brilliant.

Cheers.

Thanks for the samples. Nice shots although not tack sharp. OTOH, there are many reasons for blur, so little can be deduced here. A crop with 1:1 pixels from the single sharpest sample would be best. But maybe, we just wait until the 560/5.6 is released...

Thanks for your effort.

I've stopped uploading pics here from "my albums" or directly from my desktop, using the forum tools because of that (softtness).
I also use Flickr to post my pics here and yes, they are much sharper now.

You guys are correct, the images are not nearly as sharp as they could be.
I suspect with the high ISO capabilities of the K5 you could get better simply because you can use higher shutter speeds... All of these were shot at high ISO on my old K10D which as you know is not much good beyond 400...

So long focal length and slow shutter = lots of shake (though I manually set the SR to the maximum 800mm FL), plus the added drawback of having a rough focusing wheel...

So the originals are soft...

Can't wait to see some images from the new lens...

I stopped using my scope except for waders that are at huge distances and currently use a Canon FD 500mm with a home made FD to K mount adapter...

It will be really nice to have an available super tele from Pentax again!

Anyway, a 800mm mirror lens is many times cheaper then a spotting scope. And they produce charper images. At least, that's my experience with the 800mm vivitar.

Not at all ........ they were hand-held ! You try hand holding a scope/telescope with camera attached ! Those things should really only be used for photographing when on a tripod.

Assuming that the above mentioned Japanese patent applies here (How to search Japanese Patents in English | Patent | JPAA, A 2011-022280), then imho the 560 should be a 7+ element construction.
The AF would be solely realized by the lenses on the left in the scheme, the right group would be fixed. The aperture mechanism is in between. The DA 300s are crude guidelines for the size.

The DA 560/300 pictures have already been posted here (now approximately scaled to the mount/barrel size). The sketch was more or less duplicated by hand from drawing 1 of the above patent.
Size and design somehow look like the Leica Telyt 6.8/560 mm. Very long tube, not a lot of glass, ... I hope the improve off-center performance and add AF and auto-diaphragm to this lens.

I did not get it. Even DAL 55-300 autofocus with 1.4X TC and 1.7X AFA up to f/8 (on the lens). And I expect the 560/5.6 to autofocus with such TCs easily.
The key words were "reliably autofocus."

I haven't shot DA 55-300 for more than a year. From my early days experiments with it I remember pretty reliable lock with TC attached at f/5.8 at least. The IQ is a different story, of course.
I use 1.4X Tamron on FA*300/4.5 with f/5.6-f/8 all the time with no AF lock problem. I hope the 560/5.6, even when stopped down a bit, would AF OK, if paired with 1.4X. Anyway, it is 560mm by itself. At 780mm you'll need very stable tripod and be very careful with whole system tremor. I tried shooting at 800mm a few times (Tamron 400/4 +200F 2X flat field) and did not find it easy.

I just showed my wife a picture of the 560 5.6 when she came back from her trip (the one with it next to the K-01).

She said "Awesome, how much is it?" - I love my wife!

Haha. She loves wildlife photos and just saw a guy with a similar type of lens on her antarctic trip, so the want is high on that one. However > $2,000 would mean I would have to be making money with this lens I think.
