I just searched the size restrictions for carry-on luggage (this is always the way I take my photo gear with me when I travel - can't afford the risk of it getting lost or damaged, given the "compensation" offered) and the maximum measurement I see is 24", or 60cm, which would not be enough for a 500mm+ long lens attached to a body and fitted into a bag.
You CAN unmount the lens from the camera when traveling. Seriously, I have tried it and it works!

And should with long lenses to avoid potentially disastrous pressure on the mount from a bump. Though of course a lot depends on how well your kit is packaged.

You're right, of course! But I've had bags packed so full that it was most practical to leave the body attached to the longest lens, as there wasn't really any other place to pack it.

Another view of the same lens (CP+ show)

Looking at so familiar scuff marks on 560/5.6 image I decided to post it anyway .
Pentax 560mm K-mount 'super-telephoto' picture emerges news - Amateur Photographer - news, camera reviews, lens reviews, camera equipment guides, photography courses, competitions, photography forums
It looks like it more than 2 times longer than my FA*300/4.5.

white-balancing white?

Let's have a look at the announced 1.4x converter. It is announced as DA which probably means it is not SDM driven - making it pointless for SDM lenses like the 4/300, 2.8/200, 2.8/50-135. That would be pretty sad news. It could be great news for people with FA300/600 etc. lenses. Several years after these lenses were discontinued, there would finally be a suitable AF converter. Only a dual AF mode TC could make people happy, assuming the IQ is right. The Pentax road map is pointing in many directions with no clear goal.

During Pentax KA-mount days, there was no 4/600, but only a 5.6/600 mm lens in the program. After two versions of 4/600 mm lenses (F, FA), Pentax may want to pull back a little. The A 5.6/600 was accompanied by two "shorter" brothers 2.8/300 and a 2.8/400, well the 5.6/560 could do from some offspring. Photokina 2020 maybe??

My guess on the teleconverter is that it has both a shaft and pins to detect what you're trying to use it for. My guess is that the glass in the TC is fixed.

Since it's a TC I doubt it will be driven at all (unless we have another 1.7 on our hands!). As for not passing the power zoom electrical contacts... there's no reason not to, especially seeing as how the DA 18-135 uses them.

Not true for the FA*600, you can special order that one, not cheap though...

It's a real photo, it's from an earlier prototype that was on the old roadmap.

What would be the point of releasing a "new" TC which is not SDM compatible (would only work with the non-SDM lenses) ??

This is 2012 for crying out loud! -- Unless Pentax is going "different" again !

JP

P.S.: Apart from the recent news that the 560mm lens is going to be "off-white" (See Chex's no. 411 post above) , any further news at all?

This is what I think they will release, IF, they ever release it at all , as said, this came out a few years ago, but, was not released. One thing I hope they do is make it WR so it's a viable addition to 16-50, and 50-135 WR lenses.

Time will have the answers.

From the outside, the Tamron/Kenko look no different. I wonder how how many possible variations of a 1.4x TC you can make, or if there's actually not much choice in what the optical formula can be.

Yeah how hard will it be to seal that thing, you need one seal on the body-side mount and seals between the mount and the body of the TC, so 3 seals.
The lens mount you see on the top will be sealed by the ring on WR or AW lenses.

I doubt it will be much different, maybe different coated at least and hopefully pentax put in a code so that the camera knows it's working with a TC so that it recalculates the focal length so that the SR works for example.
