Wondering: will I spend $7000 for the Pentax 560/5.6 or get a proven lens such as the Sigma 500/4.5 for much less ??

This better be a feat of technology and with much higher IQ than the "other" lens.

I think that comparisons will follow as soon as this lens becomes available and I will be able to decide whether my hunch (to buy the Sigma 500/4.5, that is) was ... "just a hunch".

Really ?? $7000 ?!!

Actually, $7000 isn't that much for a 560mm. Super Telephotos are horribly expensive and thats why few people own them.

That is great. It is less than half the weight of the FA* 600/4. I rather have the 560mm....

Just checking the sizes for both lenses:

Pentax 560/4.5

3040 g (6.70 lb) weight
130 mm (5.12") diameter
522 mm (20.55") length
112 mm filter size

Sigma 500/4.5

3150 g (6.94 lb) weight
123 mm (4.84") diameter
350 mm (13.78") length

Almost the same weight ( a very important aspect of carrying such a large lens "out in the field") but the Pentax is definitely a lot longer (by almost 7 inches !!)
And it is "white" ... just wondering (again) ...

Hopefully, the price will drop a lot after the initial release.

Then perhaps you will get this lens.

I have never tried a 600/4, must be a monster to carry around!?

As for me: perhaps wait and see reviews and price drop, then to consider.Tough competition to the Sigma 500/4.5.

It is quite high for any lens with a 100mm front element.

I was wondering about what this has to do with the price?

Also: if this is the "telescopic" type of lens, what about the minimum focusing distance? It must be there somewhere, but I didn't come acroos it.

Element-Glass material cost is a function of element^3
Element-Machining, polishing req'd is a funciton of element^2

Etc.

Yeah ... quite a long MFD ! The Sigma, for comparison purposes, is 400 cm (4 meters) / 157.5 in !
I keep coming back to the Sigma for comparison purposes only.
It will be very interesting to find out how the Pentax performs in terms of IQ.

Thnaks.

6 elements in 5 groups (+ rear filter, not 7+)

Let me remind you:

price

[...] We are talking about a modified scope design and similiarly specced Pentax scopes use 3-4 elements (1 ED) and are just under $2000. It has much fewer lens elements than the more expensive ~10+ element designs with a 100mm front lens.

Anything above $2790 will be disappointing and anything below $1990 will be a positive surprise. My personal guess is around $2500 because of the focus motor, aperture, and possible additional rear lens group working as a field flattener. [...]

6 elements? So I really misread.

I don't actually understand this lens at all then. Does anyone?
