It should be a bit lighter than the Sigma 500mm f/4.5 which I found somewhat hand-holdable. The front element should be about 10% smaller in diameter, about 20% smaller in area, give or take and as such the front element should be quite lighter... almost 30% lighter front element if all things are equal which of course they are not.

My guesses: 2500 grams (5.5 lbs), 330 mm long (13"), $4k. OK, I actually think it will be $5-6k but am hoping with Ricoh's attempt to put Canon out of business they will try to undercut the market.

Awesome. This should work out well and give a 780 mm f/8 with the as yet-to-be-received TC. Can I order one now?

Humm it is not a star lens? Not a WR lens? Not a SDM or DC lens?

I suppose DA* has been dropped, and we now get WR and DC. Hope the full specs will be available by Thursday...

Heck, I still think it's an FA* lens. That 'DA' is a 'tentative' name. I'd be shocked if it's not an internal-motor lens.

It could even be a mirror lens based on the description :-(

True. That would be quite the kick in the teeth.

I'd assume that the lens had to be kicked off in the Hoya days... which makes catadioptic lenses unlikely. But I don't know a lens design-cycle, either.

Without WR I think it's a huge opportunity missed. I will stick to my 50-500mm Sigma, if it had of been full frame compatible and WR, I would of purchased one.

I really hope they don't go down that road. I wouldn't part with $500 for one of those.

"Sharp, well-defined images — particularly with distant subjects — thanks to the adoption of optics used in astronomical telescopes"

... sure sounds like a Mirror lens to me. [!] Are there any excellent optics used in astronomical telescopes that are not mirror base in the last century? (when it was discovered it wasn't prone to the problem of different wavelengths focusing on different points from passing thru lens elements)

Great benefit is they negate lateral CA; and light-weight. Negative is the bokeh (and I'll guess close-focus?).

+1. I really hope it is not a mirror lens, but from the description I am guessing it is very likely. At least it will keep with the small compact size .
