According to Pentax's own press release regarding this lens (K????????????????????HD PENTAX-DA 560mmF5.6ED AW?????PENTAX RICOH IMAGING) about 400 per month will be produced. That's quite a high number...

Certainly more than ten, but 4800 a year is a bit enthusiastic.
If it was half the price... okay.

I don't actually understand this lens at all then. Does anyone?
Actually, it reminds me of the very simple 2 lens, 1 element [!] Leitz Telyts 560mm with added AF (back left) and correction (back right) lenses.

Imho the MSRP price is a very bad joke.

6 elements in 5 groups (+ rear filter, not 7+)

Let me remind you:

price
A very accurate estimation... right? I guess even Falk can be wrong, very wrong at times.
IMO a high end long lens makes more sense than a cheap version nobody would buy, because the Sigma zooms are cheaper still.

The Bigma is very weak at the long end, a prime with simple design can deliver better results (I own manual lenses with 3-4 elements that do quite well, they lack any automated function, though).

And the "long range optimization" hints at not so great close range results. 5.6m isn't exactly stellar, either.

Was it in the same price region?

Not 400 pcs. per month. It means that the opportunity of manufacturing is till 400 lenses per month.

Opportunity of manufacturing?
Google translate says: "Initial monthly production of 400"

But how about a prime cheapened as much as possible and produced in lower volumes than the Sigmas?
IMO "long range optimization" could mean it will be excellent for e.g. astrophotography.

You mean something like an overhauled FA* 400 F5.6? That`s a nice thought

The problem with that is that the difference between 300mm and 400mm is almost negligible. It's cheaper and easier to just crop out the 400mm part from a 300mm picture, without a discernible loss of detail. Don't forget we're living in the digital age where cropping is very easily done.

Proof: I once owned the F* 250-600mm and I was surprised how little the differences were.

My point was that such a lens probably won't be very good, nor that cheap (think low volume) and that in the end, people would probably still prefer the Sigmas or other alternatives.

Yes, I remember. You sought it for a long time, you sold it again?

My expirience is only limited to a sigma 100-300 F4 and the sigma 1.4x APO TC but those extra mm `s do help in my case. But indeed, the TC is too much impact on the IQ so I seldom use it and found that it`s better to crop a 300mm image. Last month I tested an older Bigma and I was not impressed with the long end, in fact I found it even worse than the sigma with TC. So an "affordable", say 2000k 300+ prime would be welcome imho. Something like the Canon 400L F5.6 for example. There must be a market for that?

Yes, I could not resist the offer which was higher than the new DA 560 would cost...
