Having used the Bigma extensively I can attest to the fact that 300 to 400 is not a huge difference. I would have liked to see a Pentax take on the Bigma sold for ~£1500 - I think this should have been a higher priority than the 560mm. Although the 560mm would have been a lot easier for Pentax to design.

This is about as disappointing an announcement as it could get.

US$7,000 for the 560mm and only f5.6 !? Not in this lifetime. It needs to be spectacularly better than the Sigma 500mm (US$5,000) an f4.5 lens, and on a par with the unbelievable Nikon/Canon 500/4 and 600/4 lenses - and before it is even released we can tell it's not by it's f5.6 max. This is tragic.

This will send a legion of Pentax shooters to Canon / Nikon now that it is virtually certain there is a) no FF camera in the foreseeable future and b) the price of the 560mm is horrendously askew to the market conditions. I know of lots of posters over the forums I inhabit that have been waiting on the 560mm price - expected to be in the US$2,000 - 2,500 range and for a FF announcement.

I'm very happy I jumped early to the Sigma 500/4.5 because Pentax are not offering me anything at all in the way of reasonably priced long lenses.

Yes, I could not resist the offer which was higher than the new DA 560 would cost...
Well, as long as you didn`t loose any money on it there is nothing to be ashamed off

After bitching a lot about the 560 mm lens, let us thank Pentax for being the only manufacturer offering something more or less affordable at this focal length. This lens stands up to the 4/600 = 10 k$++ league. The lens is rather long, but hopefully quite well corrected and saving some weight over the 600's. The Sigma may be lighter, but 3 kg is a good weight, anything less will feel too light for that size. Last but not least, 7000 U$ is not the final price and the dollar, like many other currencies, is not doing that well these days. It is not a bargain, but the lens is probably not completely out of range. 4500-5000 Swiss Franks is realistic = 6000 U$ at the moment.

And the K5II will be the missing 1.5x converter after the announcement of a fullframe Pentax.

Think positive.

Was considering this for the future but price made it an easy decision...no!...still a welcome addition and would be interesting how it fares, as I saw someone comment in dpreview, it would make for a popular rental lens

It's not a 600, and it's not an f/4. Sigma does have an 800/5.6. And that one is still cheaper than the 560. Just not available for Pentax.

I can tell you without needing any test, with that design, it'll suck at close focus distance.

Perhaps the image quality will be amazing (?) but it looks like a budget telephoto....

Pentax has a history of releasing products at a high price then dropping that price after 6 months or so.

Still no way of knowing how good any lens is until it is used. And as for the cheaper and faster rival lenses, any of them weather sealed?

Instead of the Pentax... I bought a 300-800 f/5.6 with enough cash left over for a D7000, a Q, and a couple of Nikon (expensive) teleconverters.

With their second best antireflex coating, all weather sealing and an exquisite red strip?

Irrelevant. Birders have their long, heavy lenses on tripods and it's easy to put a rain jacket on them if needs be.

I really don't want to know what they'll ask for an updated 600/4 with new coating.

Mind you, it wouldn't have any sort of IS.

14.999$? Or is that not enough?

But isn't it better if they don't have to, and they can cover themselves with the rain jackets?

Rainjackets for lenses don't actually fit a human body.
