Ah yes, thanks for reminding me there, I forgot it's a 55 (though not really much of a difference there in FL). If the 50 1.8 is a totally new design, then wouldn't that push costs up? Or is it not feasible to just import the FA 50 1.7 design into a DA/DA L lens body?

FA 50/1.7 was sharp, but it's not one of the best 50 mm lens. Said - 50/1.8 is new optical design.

It's better to make new lens for digital sensors than to copy old film design.

Hmm then why is (or perhaps I only think--not an expert in lens design here) the DA 35 2.4's design almost the same as the FA 35, apart from the build?
From what I see it does perform well on digital too..

Yes, and as I have understood, a wideangle lens suffers more of old "film construction" compared to a lens with longer focal length like 50mm

DA35/2.4 has the same optical scheme, but the rest things are DIFFERENT.

I hope Pentax fits the pricing in the range of the Nikon and Canon offerings, $125.
They should have the development costs mostly retired by now. Using the DA 35 2.4 with the 50 1.8 or 1.7 optics.

This lens could open the prime lens door to the Zoombies and boost K-01 sales.

A super wide angle lens which allows a photographer to see subject through the viewfinder of a camera. Before this lens, FL19mm f/3.5 was introduced in November 1965, which had the largest aperture in the world at the time as a super wide angle lens for 35mm SLR cameras. Although this lens had great attention from many photographers, the mirror of the camera had to be locked up when this lens was mounted, due to insufficient back focus. A separate optical viewfinder had to be mounted on the accessory shoe to confirm angle of view. The FL19mm f/3.5R was introduced the following year, employing inverted telephoto type optical system to ensure sufficient back focus for mirror operation. Thus this lens could be used without separate optical viewfinder for general use as a super wide angle lens. The "R" in the name stands for "Retrofocus (inverted telephoto type)".
