I'm hoping it carries the optics of the FA50 1.7...
and the price of the DA35! lol.

As for the new K-01 lens.. something's wrong. Can't be another 40, Newson's already designed that one. Also, we haven't seen the protruding design from before... could be longer than a 40. Maybe a DA70XS?

It's not, and it's not a 70mm either from what I see. It most likely has a shorter focal length (how short?), and it has a protrusion that enters into the "mirror box" - a quite popular idea on this forums (congratulation, folks! You nailed it!) So you won't be able to use it on a DSLR.

I'm calling it now -- the K-01 specific lens is a redesign of the DA15 Limited. The distance markings don't add up but I'm sure the picture is just a pre-production unit/Photoshop job.

That 50' has a plastic mount.. count me out of that one.
Yeah, most of us enthusiasts here on the forum already have one or more of the old 50's – I myself have the FA50/1.7 and thus have no reason to get this new one – but for n years Pentax has had nothing to compete with Canon's and Nikon's cheap 50/1.8 offerings, and now they do. Which is awesome for beginners wanting to buy their first fast prime for not a lot of cash.

The new lens is very similar to Pentax DA 40mm Limited
Front element is much bigger, could be a wider lens, like 24mm or 28mm.

I'm pretty sure that one on the left is a new 35 F2.4 AL or a new DA 15.

Sorry .. not hedging just got distracted and forgot to insert it.

If not, then probably somewhere near the DA21 Limited. Dunno if it will go as wide as the 15, but I think having the XS counterparts for the DA Limiteds is what they're doing (maybe because they started with the 40XS?)

I herewith propose an (un)official nickname for the new K-01 specific lens:
Mirrorlessmaker (see peacemaker)
Mount it on your Pentax DSLR and you immediately and irrevocably get a Mirrorless...

Pentax DA 560mm F5.6 announcement analysis

My 2cts about the tele lens ...

First, analysis ...
A design based on an "astronomical scope" is not necessarily a good thing. Clearly, it's not a mirror but the better refractive (lens) variant. And often, astronomical scopes are diffraction limited which means sharp.

But very often only because of a small aperture where diffraction is large and in the center only. Therefore, astronomical scopes are typically built with fewer lens elements and/or no ED glass. They are typically no match for a true photo tele lens.

Ok, having said that and seeing the DA 560mm F5.6 would be called a 4" or 100mm refractor in astro speak, I looked up what Pentax sells in that range.

I came up with the Pentax PF-100ED spotting scope selling at $1700:

The PF-100ED is 620mm but can easily be made a 560/5.6 by slightly modifying the rear lens group (which would have to change anyway).

My first analysis let's me think that the new 560/5.6 and the PF-100ED use different optical formula despite the similiar aperture and the PF-100ED featuring ED glass. Why? Simply because the PF-100ED uses too simple an optical formula to satisfy on a digital camera, with only 3 lens elements in 3 groups!

And let me say this much in the words of pentaxforum member Matjazz when judging the PF-100ED: "Optically a scope is no match for a pricey tele lens". Yes, the PF-100ED seems to be highly regarded by birders but it simply isn't on par with an FA* prime lens in the same focal range. It is more like the old Pentax Takumar 4 lens elements long tele constructions. Which may explain why it lacks the Star designation.

So, the DA 560/5.6 may be a bit more advanced than the Pentax 3 lens elements spotting scopes but maybe not enough to satisfy.

So personally, I am sceptical when looking forward to the DA 560/5.6. I don't expect wonders. On a sensor with very small pixel pitch, the DA*300 may actually deliver comparable resolution. I will wait and see.

Here are the images of the respective offers:

My guess it's the SMC PENTAX-DA 21MM F3.2 XS we're looking at.

If the 70 comes next, my wife may well be getting a X-01!

K mount "XS" recessed lenses

Ok, I very much welcome Pentax to embrace the technical possibilty to recess "special" lenses into the mirror box left empty by K-01 and successors.

I almost had given up hope when noticing how crowded by shields the K-01's mirror box is. Pentax certainly should leave more empty space in successor mirrorless bodys to enable larger recessed apertures. But at least, Pentax got the idea

Moreover, I have no fear that K mount now forks into two species. The recessed technique only makes sense for a few small wide angle lenses, esp. primes or a kit zoom.

Don't search too hard for an existing Pentax lens reappearing in a XS skin. The recessed technique specifically allows new optical formulas with weaker or no retrofocus design. Therefore, these lenses will be new short register distance developments by Pentax.

The particular lens depicted above may be in the ~20 mm focal range and seems to be rather fast.
