What was the need to new 50mm when they had two excellent 50 (1.4 & 1.7), felt the same when they introduced DA35. People have been asking nice replacement of 85mm/1.4 which is out of production for a while, I wish they had put their research energy there.

I want full frame, too, but really if you want a full frame camera you should buy one from a company that already makes one. If you keep waiting for Pentax to do it you'll be bound to be disappointed when you could have what you want right now. Maybe Pentax will come out with FF eventually but I'm not holding my breath.

This said, I don't know what a 560 mm f/5.6 being APS-C has anything to do with the prospects of full frame. I imagine it is APS-C to keep its size and price down.

I don't have any desire to acquire a full frame camera. I bought the K5 one month ago and I'm absolutely delighted with it, particularly since I added the D-BG4 Grip.

It seems logical to me that if a Full Frame Camera was in the wind, the 560mm f5.6 would have been designed to suit both formats.

But then maybe the full specs haven't been divulged.

PS: And perhaps this is another one of Hoya's less than well thought out ideas, the R & D bucks have already been spent and this thing was ready to go into production.

Rest assured: regardless of the brand it makes absolutely NO sense to specifically design long tele lenses for just the APS-C format. The image circle of tele lenses is way too large for that.

I bet the 560mm is as much APS-C designed as the DA*200 and DA*300

My thoughts too.

No argument from me on this one either.

They stopped production of the FA50/1.7 in 2004...

The F50/1.7 is still very sought after, and people pay more for a second hand copy than a new DA35mm costs. It's obviously going to be a very easy exercise to port the optics into a 'new' lens and bring it back into production, and tap into that demand for a cheap, fast(ish) 50. I look forward to getting one - it will look better and be more compact than the F50/1.7 I recently sold, and will probably be cheaper.

The lack of a cheap fast 50 was a conspicuous hole in Pentax's lens range, and it's a popular 'first prime lens' for DSLR owners.

The 85/1.4 is a great idea but maybe more of a challenge and not such a volume seller? I would welcome it, although there's stiff competiton from Samyang and Sigma for that exact focal length/aperture.

(Of course the new 50mm might be a completely new design, but I would be surprised if they hadn't done the same excercise as they did with the FA35 > DA35, i.e. use the same optics but limit the aperture fractionally.).

I can easily see a lens like a DA85mm f/2 which would be made along the same lines as the DA35/2.4 and DA50/1.8.

i totally agree on this, and a lot of people has been asking for a fast 50 1.8, that is not expensive.
I am definitely getting one, and I think I will be as happy for that one, as the 35 2.4 :-)
Great to see a lot of releases from Pentax right now :-)

IMHO, I believe Pentax's aim is to fill in the gaps and go after the low hanging fruit.

I suspect the 560mm is the former while the 50mm is the latter. I suspect the 560mm is a DA, not DA*, to trend market demand for this product. If the demand is high, it would justify a the DA* long lense. The 50mm however is quick way to address the inexpensive fast 50 issue. They already have pre-existing designs they can adapt and bring to market quickly.

It's going to be a GREAT year.

Away with f/2.

Do it proper with f/1.4 or dont bother at all

+1

I hope that Pentax someday releases a modern prime in the 135 focal lenght as well. Something like DA* 135/1.8

Actually, I could see it more likely going in the other direction and being something like an 85/2.8, similar in size/price/spec to the Sony 85/2.8 (SAL-85F28).

What are the advantages to the Pentax adapter vs this one?
They are one or maybe twofolds :
- internal shutter, hence possibility to use high speed flash synch. (above the dismal 1/13s)
- probably K-lens recognition, or at least "settable" shake reduction
