Pentax already has the DA70/2.4, the DA77/1.8 and the DFA Macro 100/2.8 (and the excellent 50-135/2.8 too!) i.e. quite a few lenses in the approximate same range already!

If they release an FF camera, an 85/1.4 would be the most useful addition to that crowded field, IMHO.
Yes, as long as the 50/1.8 works on a FF camera, otherwise a 50 for FF would be the most useful.

I would hope that it is based on the 1.4, but with 6 blades instead of 8. It would make no sense to base it on the 1.7 and then make it a 1.8.
But doesn't the 1.7 get better ratings optically?

Depends on what aspect of "optically" you mean. I found the 50/1.7 to be a bit sharper between f/1.7 and f/2.8. However, many people find the rendering/bokeh of the 50/1.4 to be superior to that of the 50/1.7. So I think it's fair to say they each have their strengths and that neither one is optically superior to the other one.

I've read the 1.4 and 1.7 were intentionally designed for just those effects. The i.7 was used for flat work (shooting from a copy stand for printing and copying) and the 1.4 for "artistic" work. The 1.7 is said to have a flatter field and more uniform sharpness across the entire field than the i.4. The 1.4 has (of course) a different bokeh quality, shallower depth of field W/O (of course) and better highlights.

Both are great lenses for their strengths.

That's me regurgitating - not my personal experience.

That really helps explain the ongoing debates about which is better. I, personally, find the 1.4 more pleasing but I have a 50 Macro for flat field and very close work and know its strengths too. IMHO either of them, rebagged as a 1.8, would be an excellent lens for the DA35/2.4's big brother.

I want one of those for my K-5. My first camera was a pinhole camera I made out of an oatmeal container.

I thought DA meant "for APS-C" thus the 50mm f1.8 is likely not a FF lens which is a bit odd but pretty much rules out any FF pentax model

Even if the 50/1.8 only covers aps-c (which is unknown right now), I wouldn't say that "rules out" the potential for FF within the next couple of years.

DA 35mm 2.4 AL = FF lens !?

Bonjour,

Unless I'm mistaken when I recently re-read Falk Lumo's thread, the DA 35 f2.4 is Full Frame usable ( +++ rating ) ... thus, one could hope that the new DA 50mm F1.8 would also be similar in FF capabilities ... this is one reason why I'm waiting to see this lens' review(s), spec(s), etc.

See : https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/31629-da-lens-...ts-thread.html

Also see : https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/119054-da-35mm...ny-photos.html

What do you (collectively) think and/or has someone already addressed this aspect for the future DA 50 1.8?

Moi, je croise mes doigts ... Allez, salut - J Frog

That is a 150 $ lens (or so), so I wouldn't read any R&D plans into such a lens.

I can easily see a lens like a DA85mm f/2 which would be made along the same lines as the DA35/2.4 and DA50/1.8.

Please don't do it as a 85/2.0. What a waste of R&D resources. Just re-release the excellent FA*85/1.4 as a DFA*85/1.4.

I hope that Pentax someday releases a modern prime in the 135 focal lenght as well. Something like DA* 135/1.8
+1. It would be an ideal lens for low light concerts/ theater and indoor sports.

Can't find the link, but (counterintuitively) when California wanted to prohibit black paint on cars (to save on airconditioning increase in fuel consumption) the required study discovered that there is no appreciable difference in heat absorbtion under sunlight between light colored and dark colored cars. The proposal died in committee.
I didn't look it up now. But isn't it rays into the car's interiour which causes heat up? If so, black paint could still heat up much more rapidely than silver. It just wouldn't matter much with a car heating up through the windows. Black paint would even radiate more heat from the car's interiour to cool it down ...

I would love a tiny, fantastic AF 85 f/2 for Pentax full frame. Make it similar to the M 85 f2, and I would not be able to resist...

f/2

I think it would collide with the 77ltd in the lineup, though.

I love this place - we start with lenses the length of the runway at Denver International and move to black body radiation. From a white lens. This is just so much fun .....
