Star means the DA zoom won't be variable aperture - so it's either going to be 2.8, 3.5, or 4, and I don't think it would make sense if it were slow. A 28-80mm F2.8 wouldn't be all that big- at least as long as it's only for APS-C.
In general I agree but:
- 28-80 APSC only? What is the point?!? 24-70/75/80 yes. It would give you APSC equivalent of 35-105/110/120 lens. Being f2.8 it would be great portrait lens. But starting at 28mm is just not wide enough for APSC only IMO
- if they are making 24/28-70/75/80 why limit it for APSC only? This would squash any FF rumours..
- if it is 15-85 it can't be f2.8. Even APSC image circle would mean that lens of that range at f2.8 would be the size of DA*50-135 at least IMO
- why not to make it f4? Yes it's slower but it would be nice upgrade from DA17-70 SDM

You're right, f 2.8 with that wide of a zoom range is very unlikely, max 3x. But I just don't get the point of that lens, I mean we have a 17-70 f4 that's not bad and a 18-135 with variable aperture. To me it looks like either they're make a new version of one of these two, or it will be f 2.8 (DA*) but not much more that 3x zoom range ... maybe really like 20-60 ???

Perhaps because both Canon and Nikon have lenses with this focal range? So far as I can make out they're pretty popular and, if it's well designed and with WR, the Pentax lens will be a marked step up from the kit zoom or the 18-135mm. To better Canonikon, you'd need a constant f4 with great image quality, I think. If Ricoh are serious about winning a substantial slice of the higher-end DSLR market, then this is the kind of lens they're likely to be producing more of.

I was very happy with 17-70/4, switched it for 16-50/2,8 for the need of larger aperture but with the K-5 I would gladly be back to the former, if not for the wheater sealing. A 16-85/4 of DA* quality would be great for me. Even a simpler 17-70/4 DA*.

I'm hoping it will compete with the Sigma 24-70 or Tamron 28-75 f2.8s. It would be great if it pushed the extremes of both, as in a 24-75 f2.8. If it is an f/4 or variable aperture I won't buy it. I have been thinking about buying the 16-50 or 50-135 this year, but with this news I'm going to wait and possibly pick up another limited lens.

Since there also appears to be a new wide as well why wouldn't they be complimentary a 12-24 WR DC motor (f4 hopefully) and a 24-75/80 2.8 WR dc motor/SDMII. If they are FF even better since it signals a FF path, If they aren't well still excellent since both are excellent FL ranges on apsc
I agree there is not much chance of a 16/18-80 2.8 given how big it would need to be though at f3.5 or 4 it should be manageable add WR and dc motor and it could be a very intriguing lens certainly a good higher end k5 replacement kit lens

Well, I could hope that a diagram would reveal something new or unusual. Couldn't hurt.

This is Pentax not Canon, so what is the second switch on the side of the 560? The first would be AF/M but we have no need for in-lens stabilization.

I asked the same thing in another thread. Focus limiter was the answer.

Good for making subjects "steady" lol

And the DA* lens there would probably be the counterpart to Sigma/Tamron 24-70 but at twice the price...

True but with that tube colour the insect is likely to leave whatever it's on and land on the lens, before you get the shot.

I think the second switch is to adjust the GPS position from that of the camera to that of the objective.

Darn, I'll paint my lens blacker than hell...
